  • I think the piss poor marketing by the athletics department has been a constant refrain for about 10 years.  Since I don't live in El Paso, I don't have much of an opinion other than what I hear from y'all.  But as I haven't heard anything positive I will assume it's still awful.

Senter was stuck with his head coaches due to their contracts, but overhauling the marketing department is something he could have handled immediately I would think.  Any good AD should understand marketing well enough to at least know whether what's been going on is working or not.

Obviously there is only so much lipstick you can put on a pig, but still.  The old Diablos are a case in point.  No one really gave a crap if they were any good in a given year.  It was fun, and it was one of the things to do that defined EP.  That's not product, that's marketing.

  • I will say this. Golding came to El Paso with his marketing shoes laced up & ready to go. He made tons of El Paso references & had breakfast with fans at a long time local favorite. Not a bad start.
In 2008-2009, Lundy Elementary was about to open & parents got together to help build the playground. The Mike Price team showed up to help as well as market the program. They also helped out around the city a lot that year.
I didn't see Terry or Dimel doing that.
Anyway, Senter needs to get that athletic dept back to rubbing elbows with locals during off season.
I guess I'm thinking out loud here.

  • The city of El Paso and UTEP should be arm in arm. If UTEP?s marketing of UTEP and evident lack of concern the roll the losing football team plays in the public image of the school is a reflection of the Marketing aspect of business education needs to be evaluated, perhaps. The Mayer and Wilson should find time in their busy schedules to meet to see how the two huge organizations can work together. Like once a month.

  • El Paso also has historically been just awful at marketing itself.

There is a nice thread just started on the other site about just released UTEP football "promotions".

Marketing for both the city and the school also need to be more than just local.  A national campaign would be good.
