  • I was watching some of his clips & he looks OK. He and Tarke will compete for the same position & I think Tarke is a better player. Stroud is a combo F/G & he might get in the way of Archie getting some minutes.

Now that I think about it, I have not seen Stroud on campus at all.  Archie just might be his replacement. If you all remember, Stroud had to Gray Shirt because of grades. If he slacked off at all, it is by by. Anyway, this is probably a good trade off if this is the case.

  • I take what I said back. Stroud is at practice. Terry has a good problem on his hands. Because of this 4☆ coming in, he will need to accommodate for 2 extra kids. Can he get academic schillies for anyone? Will some one be gone, or will someone not come at all. Until then, we have a team waiting in the wings to bust out in the 2019-2020 season.

  • I don't see Kobe coming back next year. My other guess for who leaves is either Gilyard or Kaosi.

  • Not sure if any of you who went to the game caught this, but Archie was with kids coming in next year (Williams, Verhoeven, Tarke, & Boum). Stroud not on floor because of Gray Shirt rules.
No matter who is gone next year, we should have talent enough for 2 teams.

  • Here are a few 3☆ & up playing at UTEP in 2019/2020.
    4☆ Lathon 6'4" PG Soph
    4☆ Archie 6'6" SF Soph
    3☆ Odigie 6'9" PF/C Soph
    3☆ Stroud 6'4" SG/SF Fr
    3☆ Gilyard 5'9" SG/PG JR
    3☆ Verhoeven 6'9" PF Soph
    3☆ Williams 6'8" PF JR

Just, DAMN. Then we have transfers who proved themselves at the collegiate level.
    Tarke SF 6'6" JR
    Vila Forward 6'11" Soph?
    Boum SG 6'2" JR

I think it look obvious who Terry needs to keep. We are loaded on Guards & Forwards. I'm thinking we keep 6'11" Ezeagu C Soph & Red Shirt him, while 6' PG Magee Soph is sent off & 6'3" Combo G Zarzuela FR doesnt make it to El Paso.
I guess I'm kind of thinking out loud because this year doesnt look like much will come of it other than kids getting D1 experience.
    Am I off the mark?

  • PG Boum will be a 3rd year Soph.
PF Vila will be a 4th year Jr.

To an earlier question you had on Academic schollies, Efe would be a likely candidate if this route was taken. He was top of his HS class.

I'd agree, I think McGee would have a hard time for PT next year. I think Eze could either go redshirt or JC route. It's in his best interest to develop, would hate to lose him though. Terry has been able to recruit guys back who transferred the JC route, ex. Campbell and Vila. Recruits Zarzuela's averaging 22 pts his Sr year, and SG Wenzel is averaging 23.5 pts this year, both have been impressive from what I've read. My quess was that one or both could be red-shirting next year.

I've followed Miner ball since the mid 70's and I can't recall a roster quite as deep, talented, and young.

On a side note, preferred walk-on SG Jakobi Dill transferred to Navarro JC.

  • Thanks for the correction, ALT. I agree that our depth will be the best it has ever been.
The other thing I'd like to add is that Lathon needs to be the leader of this team. It's unfortunate that Thomas cant be that guy & I think we are not playing well together because of that conflict. I'm also hoping to see a little more run & gun next year. I think we dont see it as much, because our free throw shooting is awful.

  • Yep, I agree completely. I think we'll score a lot more next year, yet I like the defensive growth I've seen this year.  Free throw shooting has been better in conference play, but still needs improvement.

And, it's ATL, as in Atlanta btw.

On paper, yes.  I am very excited to see what happens. Until actual games happen, it's still the 1987 team that is the deepest.

  • Just watched a clip of a game with Likekele vs Archie. Likekele (who we couldn't pull in) looked pretty good. Archie didnt have his best game, but was the most athletic kid on the floor. I read somewhere both were buds. Any, I think we got the better of the 2. Likekele made way less mistakes and was the smarter player while Archie played great defense, played above the rim, & can really drive the ball.

Didn't we also have a kid named Wenzel commit?  I wasn't real impressed with his video.  I thought Zarzuela looked like he might have what it takes.  Of course we all had different standards before we loaded up, but don't we want some freshmen coming in to continue to build for the future?

  • Sisy, you are right about Zarzuela & Wenzel. I wouldn't put that much stock into the video's for either. Not only was it during their Jr year, but upon reading up on them, they both are really lighting it up with scoring right now. Of course this is in a high school world of poor defense, but both seem to be pretty good pick ups. Not Archie or Lathon quality, but good none the less.

  • Yep, I'd have to agree with you. I remember the 87 team well and the next year's team was pretty solid also. 6 players in double figures in 87, plus Soup Campbell was a big contributor as well. Glad you pointed this team out.

Difference being the 87 team had 3 seniors, next year's team may have 1 walk on senior in Campbell if he returns. The depth and experience of next years team "should" be outstanding. But, they haven't played a game yet to your point.
