  • While the football side of our athletic program is depressing, I want to break down our basketball team especially since I spoke with some folks in the AD department and they are really excited about our basketball team this year. Let's start from big to small.
Willms- This kid had a solid year last year after he got going in the middle of the season. Obviously he started off rusty, but he was healing an injury and didn't work out all last summer. The kid gives head aches to offenses in the paint and has developed some fantastic skills in the paint for scoring options. The kid doesn't move slow anymore and will be at the line a lot. Even with that 5* center in WK, I feel Willms will be the best center in the conference.
Jones- He is a 3rd year Soph and is super athletic for a big man. The kid is strong, moves well, and has developed a jumper. We all like him for his defense and he usually never disappoints. Once this kid improves on post moves and a small jumper, he will get national recognition. The kid is that good. He's raw, but good.
St.Pierre- The kid reminds me of Portalatin from a few years back. He is strong and can move, but doesn't have confidence or coordination. He moves left when he should go right, etc. The kid is a big body in the paint and can be used to foul big kids that don't have a good FT shot. I think the kid would benefit from a red shirt, but the kid is convinced he will play. Once the kid loses some baby fat, we might see more.
Smith- The kid can move and is strong. This kid has talent, but needs the guidance from good coaching to be effective at the D1 level. I think we might see glimpses of a good player, but it will take the kid a few years to develop into a strong PF. Until then, he will be put in to give breaks to other big guys.
Thomas- This is a special player for his size. He will be on the watch for the best player in CUSA. He is a SF/PF combo player. With his long jumper, great post moves, and his defense is getting much better. I expect the kid to see the charity stripe a lot, because he will frustrate defenses.
Flaggert- I expect this kid to step up his game. He is a good defender and can shoot when his feet are set. He is a favorite of CTF and because of his defense, he may get the start over Wade even though the talent level of Wade is much higher.
Wade- The kid has fantastic offense. We all saw it and he and Flaggert will compete for floor time. If this kids defense picks up, he will see more time than Flaggert.
Frazier- While on paper, we know this kid is the complete package, he has not played in a year. I don't doubt he will be a difference maker in the league, but he was replaced as a starter on the SMU squad. While I have reservations on the kid, but this is his last hurrah and I expect the kid to light it up.
Osborne- the kid has collegiate experience and can really shoot along with his great athleticism. The kid will need to make sure his defense is tip top. With him sitting last year, I think he knows what CTF expects.
Touchet- While the kid doesn't have the talent we want to see, I think we all agree he works really hard and smart. I think he is the smartest player on the team and is the perfect back up as a combo guard. I expect more from this kid as a 4yr Junior.
Omega- this is the spark plug and I also expect this kid to light it up this year. This kid did a lot of growing up here in El Paso and I expect this kid to make us proud this year.
Gilyard- I love the kids speed, ball control, and court vision. He didn't seem to put it together at the Orange/White game and he didn't play in Costa Rica. I don't think we will see his true potential until the middle of the season. I hope he turns into what we expected especially since he was cleared to play.
Magee- I like this kid and I think this kid will see more playing time at the 1 more so than Gilyard. the kid struggled with his jumper and needs to be quicker on defense, but he doesn't need to be a scorer. If he can set up his teammates to succeed, then I feel he will see more time at the 1.

Here is how I see our starting line up in the middle of the season.
    5-Willms, 4-Thomas, 3-Flaggert, 2-Frazier, 1-Omega.
Some of you are questioning the 3. This is a proven defender and has picked up his shooting. CTF would rather see advanced defense then offense. It's his MO.
Jones, Smith, & St.Pierre will back up the 5 & 4 positions. Osborne & Wade will back up the 3 & 2 positions. Lastly, we have Toucher, Magee, & Gilyard backing up the combo guard positions.

I finally am happy with our depth in all positions and I can't wait to see these kids play. I expect the 2 exb games and the Louis.college games to flow like butter with the stupid talent that we have. I also expect the Puerto Rico (if it's not cxl'd) to be competitive.

  • Personally, right now, I'm not on the band wagon like Chans. It was disappointing that the Miners didn't do better in their last tourney. I'll withhold my judgement until I see them play in person and if they can win. I know it was only an exhibition game but the outcome was mediocre to bad.

  • On paper, this is the best team in conference USA with WK at a close second.  Like I said before, if CTF can't get us to the promise land this year, he never will. Like Kuglar, it is do or die for CTF.

  • If Wade can not beat out Flaggert for playing time, he should not be playing D1 ball.

What Flagger does do really, really, really well is take a charge that kills most opponents fast breaks or easy to the hoop two. He easily takes six to eight points off the opponents stat sheet because he plays that little arc very well.

He also plays great defense and with his size, he throws off shooters. Because we have better talent in the paint, we should be able to defend the 3 ball. The length of Flaggert helps with that. Don't get me wrong, if Wade has Washburn like tendencies on defense, I will be the 1st to lobby for the kid to start ASAP.

  • It seems to me that Flaggart is only good at taking charges because he has a 4 inch jump. For his size he should be getting a shite load of rebounds and that's not the case.  :(

  • Flaggert is a lock down defender. JWash was as well at 6'8" and was not known for rebounding. I'm not putting Flaggert on the same level as JWash by any means, but they both take more pride in their defense than anything else. If you all are just paying attention to the charges Flaggert takes in a game, you are not looking at the bigger picture. Flaggert is usually sticking to the big scorer of the opposition whether it is the 2 or 3 positions.
It is risky to take a chance on Wade's scoring as a freshman. I would rather see Frazier, Omega, Thomas or even Willms than Wade or Flaggert putting up points. Give me the defender in this line up of scorers any day.
This just in, Frazier is on the official UTEP Miner Roster. I hate how UTEP doesn't get to pics until later in the semester, but at least the name, bio, etc. is there.

  • I haven't been on in a long time but I have to give my opinion on Wade.  He is a great defender.  He can guard the 2,3 or 4.  He showed that in the orange/white game.  He totally shut down Thomas when he was on him.  Wade is very long and lanky.  Flaggart does not have good foot speed but he makes up for it with a very high basketball IQ.  Wade will see as much time as Flaggart because he will play at both the 3 and 4 in back up roles.  I will say that I really like the makeup of the team and I have very high expectations, which actually scares me because they have so often me dashed.

  • Nice, Stan.

While I don't think Wade is D1 ready for the defense, if he does prove otherwise, then I will be the 1st fan to usher the kid in.
This year is most exciting for me, because it is a closure year for me. We have the best line up during CTF tenure and if he can't make it happen this year, he never will.

  • Usually by this time, CTF has 3-4 kids committing during the early signing our. At this time we have we have a Prop 48 in Royster(6'8" 245lb PF) and a verbal commit in Eyman(6'8" 210lb SF/PF). We will have Willms, Flaggert, Frazier, & Omega playing their final year and giving up those scholly's. If Royster & Eyman are here, then that is 11 scholarships. (I think) We are allowed 13 which gives us 2 more kids to find. Obviously CTF is pushing for Foster Jr, but that doesn't look likely. With our Freshmen Guards still green and learning, I would think that CTF would be looking for some experience on the JUCO side.

Anyway, we obviously are good with big men. I just hope we can score a few good combo guards. Does anyone have an insight on who are strong recruits?

  • I'm sure all have already heard St.Pierre left the team on good terms. I wish the kid well. I think the writing was on the wall that this kid was being pushed to red shirt. The kid just didn't have D1 skills yet & with the 2 PF coming next year, he figured he wasn't going to play much. I wish the kid all the best. We actually need the scholly for more SG/SF.

  • I didn't get the impression he left for 'maybe' being Red-shirted, it sounded more like a family issue. And, the dude had some serious med issues last year. I doubt he didn't expect that redshirting was going to be a real possibility. Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see how these spots are filled as we have potential to have a strong roster the following yr too. Personally, I'd like to see a JUCO that can play SF and SG. Losing Roderick Williams at this spot left a big void at SF. And a quality big man at Center, possibly JUCO, and  Foster Jr at PG.
