  • Williams is the only one scoring. We have no shooters. Not really a good sign of a good team. Yes, our defense is doing well, but somebody has to step up. Boum is chipping in, but Lathon, Vila, & Edwards are worth a damn on O.

  • I don't have access to ESPN2 so I only listened.
It appears to me at this point we are not as good as we hoped / thought.  We go 6 deep on defense and 3 deep on offense.

On the positive side, all three of our offensive threats were not playing last season.  Only one of them is taller than 6-7.

We will probably end up with about 16 wins, which is improvement.

It's now time to start Hawkins at point instead of Lathon and see if he can become a fourth offensive player.

Both Lathon and Vila appear to be regressing as the season goes along.  Maybe its because we are facing better competition, but it is a concern.

  • It's starting to look like not trying to keep Gilyard was a big mistake. Last night he chips in 14 in 20 min off the bench with 3 assists in Aggie win at Miss St. It would be nice to get that production from ANYONE on our bench. Kid may have been an occasional defensive liability but at least he could fucking shoot and score. Lathon needs to pull his head out, 4 or 5 turnovers in the 2nd half alone with zero pts. Sad, disappointing game.

Yay, now we get to play either Portland or Boise St next after Ball St. That'll sure get the fan base excited. (sarcasm)

  • While you do have a good point, ATL, I'm of a different opinion on Gilyard. I agree he is a good player, but CRT is trying to build a long quick team much like TT, Kentucky, etc. If Gilyard was a PG, it might have worked.
Our team will come into there own & I'm betting we see a much improved team come the middle of conference play. We all see the talent and it will coming out. A player like Williams will bring the confidence out of them. You watch.

Said the Optimist. Sorry Chans, but unless there's a Miracle we will need better players for next year. These one's aren't cutting it and probably won't.

  • I stayed up to watch the entire game. Ball St lost their big player early. That was the sloppyest game we have played & managed to win. 20+ turn overs probably turned Terry's stomach. I will say, there was some positive. Vila didnt see the floor, but Tarke & Archie played tons of minutes and really showed athleticism. They were probably the sloppier players, but they both did pretty good on D, hustled on O & actually contributed on scoring.
Williams- saw a little less time & didnt score as much, but was still dominant.
Odigie- stepped up on O. He still needs work on D.
Verhoeven- didnt play much & struggled a little. He did have a 3pt play the old fashioned way.
Tarke- played sloppy, but hustled, played hard D, & scored a fee times. Much better than Vila.
Archie- was also sloppy, but made up for it with intensity, D, & made tough points.
Stroud- played like a minute & was lost.
Hawkins- didnt do too well & may have got a concussion.
Lathon- helped with scoring the 1st half, but was pulled for half the 2nd.
Boum- was his usual quick self, but wasn't his usual scoring self.
The team won this with hustle & grit. Also, Terry allowing his bench to play & smart foul towards the end was good. Once again, take away the turn overs & we kill this team.
Finally, a road win. Let's see if we can do the same against Boise St.

  • Thanks for this, Chanson.  I can only listen and I fell asleep very early in the game.  What caused Hawkin's concussion?  Was it the slippery floor?  What's up with that anyway?

Sometimes you need guys like Tarke and Archie that make things happen.  It makes me think of Johnny Melvin who might turn it over a bunch, might get 8 boards of which 4 were rebounding his own missed layups, but provided a much needed spark and enthusiasm.  When he wasn't in, the entire teams energy was different.

I was thinking about what are the minimum requirements for a competent point guard.  A lot of that is pretty intangible.  Things like ability to take care of the ball, drive and dish, score as necessary, etc.  Not a great point, just an, and should average right about double figures if playing the majority of the game.  I only said 30% for PG while I feel 40% should be the number for SGs.  PGs are rarely taking uncontested shots.  Obviously they should shoot much better when wide open, so that defenders have to respect your shot.

Lathon has an ATO ratio of 1.7, and 3pt% of 21%.  This is not minimally acceptable.  So I looked at Hawkins.
Hawkins numbers surprised me.  He has a very solid 3.0 ATO ratio, and 36% from 3.  Based on that alone I would start him and see what he does.  He easily has the lowest turnovers per minute played, and incidentally leads the team in steals.

Side note:  Since Boum's breakout game against NCA&T, he is 10/24 from 3 for 42%.  Not bad at all.  More interesting, in our two losses in that time span, he was 1/4 and 1/5.  So in those two losses he was a combined 22%.  In our 3 wins he was 8/15 for 53%

  • Hawkins ran into a screen.  The floor was really wet & both team were sliding.
The Miners flat out outworked Ball St. Not a pretty game from either team, but we found a way

Funny that you should say that. This morning I kissed my wife good morning and told her Merry Christmas. She asked me where's my present? I told her that she was laying next to it. She came back and said, "great, a lump of coal".
    LOL
