Once it was apparent that no coaches were being immediately let go following the final game, I was thinking that maybe they were simply retaining the coaches throughout this first recruiting period.  I have heard that sometimes if coordinators have built relationships with some of the recruits you want to hang on to the coordinators until the players have signed in order to maintain that contact and thus not scare away the recruit so to speak.  But here we are past the early singing period, and all coaches and coordinators have been retained, so who knows?

In all seriousness, I have not heard Dimel be critical of himself in any of his press conferences or in interviews. I would be far more inclined to think that circumstances would improve if he would convey to the public that he recognizes problem areas and addresses means of improving them rather than just saying “a play here or a play there and it’s a whole different ball game.”

Dimel is in my opinion not the answer for this program. I feel like after 24 games with him at coach he really has not shown me anything to believe this whole thing gets turned around. Like so many others have said, he’s a very nice guy who always appears to maintain a positive outlook, but I don’t see him being able to right the ship, not at UTEP anyway. We are all aware that he will be given another opportunity next year, but it’s doubtful that this program will win more than 3 games. What are your opinions of the job he has done so far and do you believe he has the coaching/recruiting ability to leave the program better than he found it?

Thanks Ky for compiling those stats. I would bet that not all of the coaching staff are even aware of all the data you’ve put together. In my opinion (as with probably most on here) the football team’s problems are multi-faceted, number one of which is the lack of talent across the board but mainly and most importantly at quarterback. In this day and age you simply cannot be successful if you do not have a quarterback that can play. Kai is a tremendous athlete but he is not a good quarterback. Every team UTEP has faced this year has had more talent at the quarterback position. The lack of talent of course spreads to really all positions, with maybe the exception of the kicker. Not saying there are not players at certain positions who are decent football players but there is not a whole lot of depth at each position. All of this stems from the difficulty in recruiting, which honestly can be discussed for hours.

The other big issue is the lack of discipline and tendency to always beat themselves. Whether it’s penalties, untimely turnovers, costly mistakes, etc., these issues come up each and every game. There has not been one game where this team has not shot themselves in the foot. This to me is a direct result of poor coaching.

I’d love to hear some other opinions.

When you say under the gun to produce, in what ways specifically? Is Dimel under pressure even in his second year? I’d imagine his OC would be the first one gone if this offense is as anemic as they were last season.

Natalicio saying "NO" to 3 seperate invites from the Moutain West Conference.

Just how deep can we get with this subject?

I'd be interested to hear more on this. What was her reasoning for turning down those offers?

Our passing game is just awful. Locksley can run but has trouble moving the ball through the air. Metz on the other hand has no escapability and makes terrible decisions when throwing. Running game has been respectable.

In my opinion the current problem with this team, as some of you guys have already mentioned, lies in the quality of players that make up this roster.  The team consists of many guys who frankly have no business playing division I NCAA football.  Kugler and his staff truly picked up players from the bottom of the recruiting barrel, lots of which are from El Paso.  Now I am an El Paso native and I love the idea of having home-grown players playing ball for the Miners, but the reality is that the talent coming out of the Sun City is not up to standard.  I asked a recent former player from UTEP's football team (who himself graduated from an El Paso high school) how many players he thought were division I quality players that graduate each year from El Paso.  His answer, maybe 4 to 7 across the entire city.  How many are on this roster?  Obviously, this is only a small part of the overall much larger problem.

When you go to the games, watch the players warm-up for both UTEP and the opposing team that they may be playing.  You do not have to be a scout to see the difference in quality from our guys to theirs, no matter really who they are playing.  Northern Arizona, for instance, has some pretty damn good football players on their team, from the quarterback, wide receiver, running back, punt returner, both offensive and defensive lines, etc.  Now Ky, I am not making the lousy excuse other people are making that Northern Arizona is a "pretty good team so let's not feel too bad about our guys."  No, what I am saying is teams like Northern Arizona have recruited and developed players who are quality, division I NCAA athletes.  Our roster seriously resembles that of, for really lack of a better description, a high school team made up of fifth year seniors if there ever were some.  There is not a lot of speed, there is not a lot of size, I personally do not see tons of athleticism, they are not exactly physical at the point of attack, and there is not heaps of skill among every position.  I am sorry to say but our players do not currently meet a standard that is competitive with other NCAA football programs, and that is the result of very poor recruiting.

Hope is not lost however.  I do believe this coaching staff is superior to the previous group.  I do think they will be able to improve the program with better recruits and transfers, which they have already shown.  It is going to take time to develop and nurture this project, but it's going to require lots of sweat and grit and a commitment to constant improvement.  The sloppy penalties and poor assignments on Saturday night though, needs to be cleaned up NOW.  No excuse for that nonsense.  But I am hoping, as the rest of you, that the team will pull through and begin to trend upwards.
