Has anyone been keeping track of the roster situation?
Who has definitely left, who is in the portal but not formally left, and who is still with us as far as we know?
Obviously this is subject to change once coach and players meet, and he views film or whatever he needs to do to decide who he does and doesn't want. If they aren't already gone, I would like to see him attempt to re-recruit TV and Agnew for their defensive intensity. Both could score better in a properly designed offense. I also feel like a better coach could make much better use of Sjolund and his lights out shooting from 3.
Due to our offensive "strategy" we had one reliable scoring threat -- Boum, based primarily on volume of shots.
-
I believe Verho, Odigie, & Hess entered the transfer portal. It doesn't mean they are leaving, but that they are keeping options open. Vila & Williams were Sr's & have a choice to either stay or Grad transfer. I don't think Williams will stay, but it might be smart to keep Vila.
Because this coach is truly a players coach, he should do a good job at retaining who he wants.
-
I just did some poking around on our roster and on the transfer portal. If you assume players that have announced are leaving (plus Williams), as of right now we have two players on the team that are higher than 2 stars -- Bienemy and Kennedy. If Fisher still comes that makes three.
There's a LOT of players on the transfer portal Most are 2 star, but there's a reasonable number of 3-4 star players.
For reference, according to Verbal Commits, within CUSA we have the 3rd highest average star with 2.52 with ODU #1 and UAB #2. Obviously the star ranking is not great, but it suggests that we are all getting roughly the same talent. UNT near the bottom which shows the value of coaching skills. Within the WAC, no one is even close to NMSU at 2.87 which is higher than anyone in CUSA.
So using the weak rating system, even with our current talent level if CJG can make the most of them we should be at or near the top which we all felt. A relatively minor upgrade in talent from the portal and there is no reason we can't dominate CUSA like NMSU dominates the WAC. All assuming Golding is the coach we think he is.
-
Just saw Sjoland will be transferring. We are really running put of big men. We can't be upset. Yes the guy can shoot, but if you suck at D, you are not gonna play. I wish the kid all the luck where ever he goes. Another thing I noticed, the kids the jump to more than 2 schools, have lots of problems. UTEP is done with problems.
-
Williams just entered portal. We all expected that. I hope all the best for him. If he goes to TX, then I hope they win the whole thing.
While that is going on, I'm sending Golding good vibes to pick up talented kids.
-
Fisher gone.
Gonzaga has a 7-0 5-star center transferring out -- hey I can dream.
-
Boum g
Kennedy g
Agnew g
Bienemy g
Onyema f
White g
Clardy g
Dekoninck f
Spellings are not guaranteed but this is what UTEP has on their website.
It seems to me that Coach will be putting his team on the floor on day one. It may be the foundation but it is going to be mostly his team he plays with unlike inheriting a complete team. I think Boum is just fine. I will bet you that he becomes a defensive madman. East Bay Grease means something in Northern California. Bienemy will play defense like crazy. Kennedy and Agnew will play defense. Those two need direction and control but their energy level is good enough to play fine defense. But we have nothing beyond that besides raw athleticism and hope.
-
That top 5 you put up are a pretty good team in Conf USA. Actually, playing small is what UTEP has had a history of winning with. Onyema needs work, but he'll learn quickly. We really need 1 more combo guard & a few big guys.
-
I think with the way that Coach plays defense that the four guards will perhaps keep each other fresh. I expect him to bring in some height and power for some balance. I think he is a control freak and every move both offensively and defensively is very strictly choreographed. I think he will have a desire to feed it in down in the paint for uncontested layups. This isn?t going to be Barber?s attack the glass and stuff it in or Terry?s dependence on Williams or Boum to be on.
Just guessing but I think we may see basketball that The Bear could maybe even smile about.
-
Saw Williams has visited Texas Tech. My kid is a student there & he is stoked if he goes. I think Williams would be a good fit for his last year there. Kind of crazy this will be his 6th year in college. I hope he gets his Masters.
Now, we need a few big guys to come here that can defend the way Golding expects.
-
I figure he will follow Terry to UT.
-
So...I was looking at some ACU film and those boys are in constant motion when playing defense. Our guards are going to need rest with that relentless defense. Big men keep the paint clear while guards contest every perimeter shot. Golding needs to recruit a whole team. I'm talking 3 more long kids & 2 combo guards.
Just looking at that defense gives me chills.
-
I see Joe is hitting the JUCO trail hard. He has offered 3 combo guards. 2 of them from the borderland (Las Cruces & El Paso). These are straight up hustle kids.
I haven't seen any activity for big men. Will he keep the likes of Verho & Williams? If he does, he shall be referred to as Coach Hudini. Ideally, we need about 3 (6'7"-6'9") kids. I'm also hoping the guards he brings in are scorers. I know we all want shooters, but some of our best players were not shooters. They were scorers.
-
I saw something that Boum was statistically one of the best catch and shoot scorers in the country. I think he felt like he had to force things because no one else could score -- and maybe CRT told him to.
If they can create catch and shoot opportunities for him through an offense designed to do that, he can be a lot more efficient.
If Williams stays, and they can run some legitimate pick and roll plays, he could really rack up a lot of points. That would create opportunities for him where he has the ball in motion towards the hoop. If they double, he may score anyway or kick out to Boum for that catch and shoot.
If no Williams, they can still create opportunities via screens. I have legit never seen a college team set worse screens than the CRT teams.
-
A couple of thoughts to throw in. I know I have mentioned it before but I don?t think it can be underestimated, and that is the tradition? or culture maybe of Oakland basketball. I think that Boum will bloom under CG. I think that the kind of a active defense and the pressure it brings will allow him to be a much more complete offensive player. In the process although I am almost sure that Williams will be gone, but all players on the floor will be much more actively involved in the offense the defensive pressure brings. As the game progresses and the pressure takes its toll the controlled offense becomes easier, too.
-
Looks like Golding offered a 6'10" JUCO from Houston. I saw some film on the kid & he is very athletic. We need a few more like him.
-
That's a good size. What classification is he? How many years can we play him?
-
2yr.
We need to land that kid
-
Well, thinking harder on kids coming. I forget nCAA allowed 2020 to be a year no one gains a classification. So...I'm guessing a 2yr JUCO can come in as a Sophomore & be eligible for 3yrs.
-
Is there any kind of deadline we are up against for signing Jucos, D1 transfers, or incoming freshmen?
-
I'm no expert on time frames, but we have picked up kids in the past right before the season started. Those were special circumstances. The time to get kids is now while talent is available. Most of this stuff is virtual, so I hope Golding & company are thinking outside the box. An example might be to do virtual from The Don with banners in the background with team playing Dodge Ball. Maybe background video loop of The Don rockin.
-
Looks like we got a commit from the 6-10 kid. He seems pretty athletic

-
This guy was all district for D in High School. The kid looks like he has a lot energy. He's gonna need it. I guess he is Goldings 1st recruit at UTEP. If you're not including the kids he had to convince to stay. We need 2 more big guys & a few shooters.
Get it done, Golding.
-
So I was looking @ more film on Mering. A lot are breakaway dunks, but there is a lot to show that the kid is good with his hands. He controlled a lot of quick passes & odd angled rebounds for a score. I think I read he is 40% from 3. I also saw quite a few 12 footers he made. He is a natural shooter.
I think we have a diamond in the rough here. At least I hope we do. Overall, he & Onyema need to work together well since Onyema has 4yrs & Mering has 3.
-
I think there's a lot of raw athleticism in the paint. Both bigs have the potential to be very dangerous in pick and roll, where they are in motion. Both strong to the hoop. Saw some video with Mering showing a nice drop step. You seal your defender off with that and it's game over. Anyone remember Lechner at Wyo? Deadly with that. Less confident about Onyema in a back to the basket situation. Can they play D?
Shooting may be OK if we can create better opportunities for Boum and Kennedy. I find it really hard to believe that Kennedy is as bad as his shooting was last year. I wonder if it won't be better in a better offense.
Agnew very energetic and aggressive defensively.
Bienemy needs some confidence. I liked him early but it seemed like he fell apart as the year progressed. No matter what, need a quality backup PG.
I just really hope all our guards issues was the lack of a legit offensive plan. I think no one knew what was expected of them. IMO, CRT wanted them to play disciplined while not providing any real guidance. Imagine trying to run an offense in a pickup game. Kind of what it felt like.
-
We have the 1-3 covered & just need back ups. Bieniemy, Agnew, Boum, & Kennedy will be much improved come 2021-22 season & we should have them for 2022-23. I seriously love that. If I'm not mistaken, Clardy & White are staying & will get some good defensive training. They don't need to score, they need to be defensive specialists if they get playing time.
Boum- flat out scorer & needs to work on control.
Bieniemy- controls the floor well & is OK on D, but needs better shot frequency.
Agnew- an explosive player that is great on D, but also needs to be better at shooting.
Kennedy- good D & rebounder. Also needs to find a way to score.
Then there is the post. Mering has game time experience, but not at D1 level. Onyema saw little playing time, but was explosive on O. Golding will help both play D. We actually don't need them to be scorers, except to make the obvious dunks. If they are not going to score, they need to be good with passing out. Williams was not very good with passing out when he was dbl teamed. I hope Onyema learned some of those post moves. Verho was good @ D only. I think Onyema will do OK at the 5 while Mering, being the more versatile player, should play the 4.
We need 3 more big guys & 2 more shooters.
-
I'm reading on the other site that Williams interviewed with Golding. I think it is cute, but since Williams can go to any school he wants, he will be gone.
If for some crazy reason he stays, then that tells me a few things.
1) I have no idea what I'm talking about & need to re-evaluate my thought process on recruits.
2) Golding can recruit his ass off.
3) I will gladly eat crow.
I will say this, Golding picked up a 7' kid to play for ACU & beat TX. The kid was meh, but Golding coached him up & he played his Ars off against 5☆ talent & won.
What I'm saying is, Golding puts a good product on the floor because he a good coach, knows how to win, & it seems he has a better relationship with the players than the last few coaches.
So, I don't think we should worry about the end product, but how quick will the turn around be?
-
Instant
He reminds me of Gillespie. He is a control freak. He is about to teach them how to dance. Each step and with precision and relentless in your face defense. Trouble is getting talented players to play this way. It is really hard work and much of the fun of just jamming is gone. But it is a winning way if players buy in. I think he might be able to sell ice in Alaska.
-
Some interesting news. BJ Maxwell 6'4" SG is being recruited by Golding. The kid was released from ACU for violating school conduct policy. He was released along with J.Friday 6'9". Friday in 2019 committed to NMSU in 2019, but I'm not sure that stuck. Maxwell is a good shooter & a great passer. If Golding can pick him up, he would blend nicely into the 1-3 rotation. Im Not sure what they did, but Caracter & Archie got a 2nd chance here & it changed there lives for the better. I hope we get him. That Friday kid was a D. Character type of player. Heavy bodied dominant in the paint type player. I hope he is also on Golding's radar. Both eligible for 1yr only.
-
Right now I mainly hope we get warm bodies.
-
Last thing for today, unless new news comes up. It would be smart if our Bball & Fball reached out to some local kids with the help Aaron Jones to assist in recruiting. El Paso doesn't have as much talent as a lot of metro areas, but at least try to keep some kids here. El Paso loves Aaron a lot. Having him reach out to local kids like the likes of KJ Lewis could make a difference.
UTEP needs to think outside the box to compete with the bigger schools.
-
I hate to say this about my hometown, but El Paso is filled with the most short-sighted, unimaginative thinkers in terms of marketing, and UTEP is like the pinnacle of that. Although the local politicians might surpass them.
EP could do so many things to improve its image, but doesn't. Ditto UTEP.
-
He picked 6? 10? f Bonke Maring from Blinn.
UTEP has extended offers to two other JUCO prospects including Jorrell Saterfield (Ranger College, guard) and Jaeden Zackery (Chipola College, guard). They are also in the mix for a pair of Division I transfers?Maryland forward Jairus Hamilton and IUPUI combo guard Jaylen Minnett.

Tydus Verhoeven, who entered the transfer portal following the season, is still practicing with the team. Coach Golding told 600 ESPN El Paso two weeks ago that he felt good about potentially keeping Verhoeven on the squad, but nothing has been made official.

Zachery committed to Boston College.
-
verhoeven staying
-
Just saw that! It adds a bit more stability to the team concept.
-
Wow. That is big news. He is very welcome. 2 more years of that guy is fantastic. Way to go Golding. We have 3 big men & Verho is great on D. If you think about it, UTRP really only rotated 3 big men. Verho, BW, & Odigie. Sjoland was more a very long 3 that helped rebound. We need 1 more big back up. The rest we need SG & SF.
-
To me this indicates that he has been told that he be will get an opportunity to show his offense in set plays to a much greater extent and doing it with Boum and others he knows will be better for him that a crap shoot move. It probably means that Williams is gone and Verhoeven figured it would be different next year. All speculation on my part but we don?t have much else
-
Golding's 1st 2 recruits are big men in 6'10" Bonke (3yrs) & 6'9" Verho (2yrs). Our roster is shaping up nicely, so far.
1- Bieniemy 6'4"
2- Boum 6'2"
3- Kennedy 6'6"?
4- Maring 6'10"
5- Verhoeven 6'9"
This is a long squad.
Back ups are Onyema, Agnew, White, Clardy, & Dakonic.
Our starting line up looks pretty good. I also agree with KY that Verho will need to take BW's & Odigie's place in scoring opportunities. His issue with scoring is he was too slow going to the hoop. If he speeds up & works on a few post moves, his size will help him finish. If Kennedy & Bieniemy can't hit the jumper with consistency, then I hope Golding has them drive/score & drive/kick out. Agnew is great on D, but because he is not quick or long, he needs to hit jumpers & less driving to the hoop.
We need 1 more mid/big man (6'6"+) & 2 more shooters (height not as important).
Just so you all know, I think our talent is stronger than Goldings ACU team that beat TX. I could only imagine what these kids can do with his style of play.
Let's see who else Golding brings to the table.
-
I think we need a solid backup PG we can trust. I don't really trust any of the other guards with primary ballhandling duties in a critical moment.
-
I think I agree with you Sis.
But let me get even less specific in my analysis. I think we all are thinking of our players as the players they were when we last saw them-under Terry. They will be a year older and that year will have been spent with Golding when we see them next. Apples and oranges. Let me try and give an example. Like you said about Verhoeven I agree, but I don?t think it will be like that. I think he will be put in position to shoot his short jumpers wide open based on precision ball movement. I see him being in completely different position and attitude under the basket because teams won?t just collapse and clog inside. I think Kennedy will get opportunities to use his athleticism to his best advantage. If we play smothering defense Agnew and Kennedy have a chance to make defense great again and it would allow them to take advantage of their best assets.
-
I agree with everything you are saying about these guys in terms of shooting. There's a rhythm to an offense and when players are in tune with that they shoot much better. I expect better shooting out of every one of them. But bringing the ball upcourt with someone (or two) in your face is different. That's all about being cool headed and confident. That's why I'm more worried about a backup PG than more shooters. Boum freaks out. Kennedy is not under tight control. Agnew is all over the place. Just a backup Gym Bice kind of guy that isn't going to do anything stupid for 2-3 minutes to give Bienemy a breather is all we need. And he will need a breather if we play the kind of D I think we will.
-
I think we need a solid backup PG we can trust. I don't really trust any of the other guards with primary ballhandling duties in a critical moment.
Good point, Sis. Boum handling the ball at the end of the Kansas game was proof we need a ball handler. Plus, Agnew with all those lost balls started to take it's toll. I really don't know anything about White & Clardy's ball handling skills. Looking at Golding's teams, they had good ball handlers & guards.
Now that I think about it deeper, Golding checks off on most of what Haskins would consider a good coaching style.
-
I went back and watched the ACU UT game. I think us old folks are going to love this team. It is basketball defense played the way we learned it from The Bear. Also, and it is a real wild thought, but I could see a way that BW could stay here. Williams weakness is defense. He picks up early fouls and sits to fifteen minutes of the fist half. In the pros others offensive stars will wear him out. Terry never even tried I don?t think. But Golding will demand it And convince Bryson that it is for his own good. I think Golding might be able to sell him that the defensive training of a year would be worth more than the exposure of a bigger team. Golding could sell ice in Alaska. If he were to be able to keep BW while coaching his way the team would be very dangerous.
-

As it has been written, so let it be.
Actually, you may be on to something. As much as I could tell that the guys weren't getting offensive coaching, it wasn't obvious to me that they weren't getting defensive coaching because at times they were quite good. So I just assumed that BW either wasn't much interested in D, or was just too slow. But maybe he was just not being taught -- "let them figure it out". He always has seemed coachable.
-
I am glad you said that because I also felt like Terry had them playing pretty good defense at times, too. But it seemed more a matter of who had turned up the heat than team defense. I firmly believe that Williams got his move by practicing them like dance steps and that is the kind of defensive teaching and practice he needs to develop. His quickness of movement on offense is what stuns defenders. He needs to build his defensive foot speed to equal it.
I got the impression that Terry brought in talent and tried to get it to mesh. Golding brings in players and teaches them the efficiency and power of a finely tuned machine. Golding teaches that if you scored twenty but your man scored twenty one it isn?t the same as scoring fifteen but holding your man to six is cool.
-
KY,
I'm with you, dude. I saw the TX v ACU twice & that defense was relentless. Everything was challenged. They made TX look average.
-
It looks like 6'7" Luke Turner combo forward committed to Wofford U. The kid is from Cali & he's going to a school that is in the SC sticks with a population of 1700 students. How did we not win this guy? I'm thinking Golding may have something else up his sleeves. We really could have used him. I guess we need to be a little more patient.
-
Yeah, coach may have his sights set a little higher.
-
BTW, I would love to see Onyema as the trailer on a fast break, or a set play alley oop. He is so athletic and strong to the hoop.
-
One of the biggest complaints I had was the revolving door of players. I may be wrong again but I am hoping that it is a good sign that stability has become a strong impression I am getting already. I recall Coach Golding talking about this in his introduction and I love that he obviously wasn?t just blowing smoke up our ass. More important to me is that he has obviously made it clear to his players. He is building a team-not assembling talent. Cohesiveness was probably the missing key to success for last year?s team. Agnew and Kennedy played with hair on fire energy but it was just the going off on their own. Just watch what happens to them when they are doing it for the team they love! He has already pulled his team together. A team that might have scattered like roaches when the light switch comes on but instead it is gelling. I already think the team has been upgraded without changing the players. If Williams realizes what his teammates have already realized I think this team could destroy cusa teams. I will stop but I will say that the more Williams witnesses what Golding is doing the more I think he will want to stay but in a completely different role that Terry used him for. I think Williams knows it. I think Coach Golding has made it clear that Williams could be part of much better and better himself too. Oh, and by the way El Paso has a way of winning people?s hearts.
-
Not to mention, he can be a legend in El Paso, while wherever else he goes, they won't bat an eye after that year. He'll get the same NBA attention if he kills it here.
However, I must digress. If winning an NCAA championship is on his mind, he needs to go to a basketball power school. I will be shocked & impressed with Golding if he stays.
-
If BW buys in 100% and puts out full effort every night like against Kansas and AZ St, I would love to have him back. Otherwise, I'd just as soon move on.
Last year's team with CRT was as good as any team in conference when BW was playing well. If he came back and played all-out I like us to challenge for conference title. As things stand with no BW, no Sjolund, and no backup PG, I will be happy with upper half of conference and just looking like we know what the hell we are trying to do. I may update this when/if additional pieces fall in place.
But as it stands, we have returning one PG, one SG, two SF that haven't proven they can shoot from the outside, and a starting center that doesn't score much. All are pretty decent defensively. Plus some unproven backups / transfers. I like Onyema's potential, and I think Bonke shows potential but right now we just don't have much proven scoring talent or proven reliable backups.
-
Starting lineup;
Verhoeven f 6? 9?
Maring f 6? 10?
Boum g
Kennedy g
Bienemy g
With lots of players getting lots of playing time because the defense pressure will need to be kept fresh. Agnew coming off the bench to set the tone for some of the young guns who will be getting their chance will be amazing. If Williams stays insert him for Kennedy.
-
Saterfield signs. This looks like a good piece of the puzzle
-
Very nice. The Las Cruces kid can shoot & drive. All we need are 2 more back ups. A big man & a ball handler.
1- Bieniemy
2- Boum
3- Kennedy
4- Maring
5- Verhoeven
If Williams pulls a miracle & stays, insert him for Maring.
We have a pretty good team. Think about it. 4 starters are coming back & they have multiple years of eligibility.
If Golding gets his kids bought in, we can be in top 4 of conference. I also would love to see another close one against Kansas.
-
Read 'em and weep, fellas. Not bad statistics. I'd like to see better free throws, but look at scoring & 3's.
-
Am I the only one that wonders why we haven?t heard anything about Bryson Williams? We haven?t heard of him choosing to transfer to one of the big programs. You would have thought that he and they would like to get that done. And yet here he is practicing with his team. Is he actually having trouble picking the team to transfer to? Waiting to see who is where first? Or is it that he is liking what he sees. If there was such a thing as investigative journalism we might get clues and that would be like local sports news.
-
When you retired from reporting UTEP sports everything went to hell in a handbasket, Ky. Firstly, the local media sucks as far as reporting UTEP sports and if they do say something it's usually a one minute segment. Secondly, UTEP does a piss poor job of it too. I guess they don't want anyone to care about UTEP sports.
-
It is a great story for sport journalism, but try not to dwell on it with orange goggles. I am looking at the solid components and what we can potentially do with it. Williams is playing the system.
-
I don?t mean to bitch but when you google UTEP basketball recruiting news you get weeks old stuff. I don?t know what is occupying local sports reporter?s time. Not that anyone would be interested in knowing what the latest is up with Williams.
On another note, I recently saw that we set records for honor roll student athletes reinforcing my thinking that academic standards may be part of the reason for a handful of wins the last few years. I am all for having geniuses play football if they are good at football.
-
I don't understand this at all. UTEP will basically allow anyone in as a student, and I'm not criticizing that. If they want to raise standards for admission, why would you start with the athletics program?
-
We are Tier 1. Harvard on the Border doncha know!
-
So...I was reading what Adrian Broudus (I probably destroyed his name) wrote this morning. He said Williams will not be returning & is looking for a P5 conference team that has a chance in winning a championship as well as giving him more exposure for the NBA.
I wish him all the luck in the world.
We move on.
-
The other site has some highlights of some of the players we are after.
I really like the French PG -- especially since he appears to take pride in defense. I also like how mobile and versatile the RS freshman Pearson looks to be. I would like us to pick up a more experienced PF, and the McNeese transfer Feazell might fill that need. I like that he got 13 pts and 10 boards per game. Someone who is willing to work for the rebounds is much needed. TV works but gets pushed around a bit.
With the addition of Saterfield we should have some weapons from 3, assuming that Kennedy can shoot better than last year. Bienemy had his moments.
if we land any of these guys I really like us on paper for next year
-
Agreed. I was also looking at that kid who played for Boston College. That kid is a beast at 6'7". He would fill that PF position nicely. I didn't look at any of the point guards, but I hope they will be OK as a back up PG.
With Kennedy being a combo SF/SG, we have only have Bieniemy, Saterfield, & Boum to share the load.
We do need a PG though. Remember when we had only 1 PG under Floyd with Willms, Hunter, & JWash? Jones was pur back up. I thank him for helping out, but we could have used a true PG since CJ Cooper was forced to convert to the PG position.
I'd rather play small than tall. I'll try to find some vids on that French kid.
-
I don't understand this at all. UTEP will basically allow anyone in as a student, and I'm not criticizing that. If they want to raise standards for admission, why would you start with the athletics program?
NCAA requirements for athletic admission (and participation) is HIGHER than UTEP's general admission standards, and has been for thirty years or so. This is nothing new, and the number of student athlete's on the Academic Honor roll is tied to performance bonus for the coaches, the AD, and such. UTEP does a good job keeping kids on track to graduate, and those that have any iota of intelligence, usually end up on said Honor Roll.

Congratulations to Bryson Williams. He got his degree and he is a Miner forever, now.

I did not realize this.
And yes, congrats to BW. I hope he has success whatever he decides to do.

You might want to check their majors, though. Quite a few years ago, many universities created a generic Interdisciplinary Studies major. The university I worked at certainly has one. It is essentially a liberal arts degree where students can pick courses in three our four areas that total to 120 hours. They need to have at least 42 hours of upper division work in their major. The cynic in me sees how it would be easy to have certain courses set that such students (athletes and non-athletes) could take.
When I was department chair, I once had to advise an incoming football player who was transferring from Texas A&M. He needed some advice figuring out what math class to take. Since he was an academic sophomore, I wondered why he had not taken a math class in his first two years. He told me he had been taking Ag courses for two years. I could not believe that, so I logged on to the admissions website and pulled up his transcript. Sure enough - two solid years of agriculture classes. No English, math, history, or other core classes required by the state of Texas were listed.
The student was honest, though. He knew this was messed up and wanted to get (in his words) a real schedule. Luckily, SHSU had a good academic compliance officer to help him.
Now, there are plenty of athletes that have more traditional majors and they work hard at them. Z is right about the requirements. Still, there are ways to play the system.

I am a cynic, and I think that for most athletes at most schools, the actual school part is a complete farce. But the business is so big schools will never go back to a day when the athletes were legit students. Honestly, in my opinion, most colleges are more interested in the money these days than the education part of it even on the academic side of things. This is one of the things I admire about Natalicio and UTEP -- she was committed to providing the best education possible for as many people as possible. If you don't have to pay room and board, you can still get an education at a Tier 1 school for under $10k / year. And that is keeping the focus where it ought to be. I hope it continues under the new regime.

No recruiting activity to report at this time. A few guards & some PF's are still in the mix, but no solid gets at this time. We 1st need a solid big man to make it a 4 man rotation. Out starting guards are proven, but we need a back up ball handler.

UTEP's Multidisciplinary Degree was nt created for Athletics, all though a large number take advantage of it. It was created as a way to move people out the door, especially those non-traditional students, who have too may hours from multiple schools (both JC and 4yr) and should have graduated twice over. Aligning curricula between levels and campuses is difficult, thus we did the BMS.
I agree with Leib, I have seen tons of transfers with cray cray transcripts, but they deserve a quality education. I like to think my alma mater provides that.

Thanks for the clarification. I believe that the UTEP is probably the very best deal in the country. Of course I was just a teacher.

Z is right about the reason for creating the degree. At Sam Houston State, if an undergraduate has more than 140 hours on their transcript and still no degree, they have to start paying out of state tuition! There are a few exceptions, depending on degree plans.
I also remember visiting some of my UTEP professors when I was working on my PhD at UT-Austin. They all wanted to know if UTEP had prepared me well. It sure had. And it is nice to know that it still does.

We haven't had any recruiting noise in a while. We still need a big man & a ball handler.
I read the other site & a few think we have a steal in Jorell (Superman's dad). I saw a few vids & saw he can shoot & is a strong 6'4". What I didn't see was ball handling & quickness. D1 speed is a lot faster. I hope the kid can acclimate sooner than later.
Also, I finally saw "Last Chance U" on Netflix. Not sure if any of you remember Floyds walk on Highler, but he is one of the kids featured on the show at East LA Community College. The show is well done. Even though I am happy Highler was able to get a scholarship at a D1 school, I'm glad we didn't offer him one here. He was very inconsistent. If you haven't seen the show, you should. KJ Lewis was another kid highlighted in the show & he will be going to TX Tech. Kid is a beast.

My last year at UTEP, I decided Metallurgical Engineering was not for me. I worked at ASARCO during my years at UTEP and saw many things I did not like. I lacked two semesters to finish which I did. I then decided to go to UT Austin and basically took a Liberal Arts curriculum for two years before entering a graduate program. Did UTEP prepare for the increased dedication required at UT? Yes and no. I didn't have to work as hard at UTEP. But it did provide a good enough foundation to succeed at UT. UT's standards were higher and I definitely had to work harder and longer to succeed for those two years of Liberal Arts courses. And Graduate School? Definitely had to be dedicated and put the time in. Did I get an adequate education at UTEP? Yes! But I speak from the curriculum of the engineering program including all the science and math courses I also took.

As I look at recruits, Khalfani Hill 6'9" PF was recruited by Terry in 11/2020. I'm reading on other sights that he is probably moving on, but I see no evidence of that. I checked multiple social media sites & none of them say anything otherwise. I don't see anything on Instagram or Twitter that he is still looking around or any signs of de-committing. Does anyone else see or hear of anything different? Just curious.
-
It looks like 6'1" PG/SG Kezza Giffa has signed with UTEP. Great get from Golding. I think we have all guards in place. We just need 1 big guy & we have a complete team. I'm not sure if any of you have seen vids on this French kid, but he is good.
-
I watched video of Kezza Giffa and i was really hoping we'd sign him. I liked what I saw a lot. IMO, this is a huge piece. I think that Bienemy wore down a bit as the season progressed.
Completely agree with Chanson. One more decent big man that can give us some quality minutes and we're in very good shape.
-
Man, I'm really impressed with this Kezza kid. He is the complete package. He's got speed, passing skills to the max, he can make his layups (something we've been lacking because the people we've had would be able to penetrate but almost always missed the shot), he can shoot from the outside if need be. He has pride in his defensive skills. I just wish we could have him for more than two years. Golding seems to have a good eye for skill. I can't wait for basketball season, this time for sure.
PS you can find him on Youtube under his name.
-
I believe the kid is coming in as a Freshman. I think we have him for 4yrs, Mojo. I don't think the kid will be used to the speed of our league, but his ability to finish with contact is really good.
-

I don't usually disagree with you but on the subject of speed I think he can function more than adequately. I can't wait to see him in a Miner uniform.

I hope you are right. The only time I saw a guard in high-school that I knew would be fine with the speed was Omega Harris. Even Culpeper needed a year to acclimate.
-
Signed a 6-8 player, Jamari Sibley, transfer from G'Town. 4 star on verbal commits. Will have 4 years
-
What a get. I saw video on the kid. He can jump, he's very athletic, and has an OK touch on his jumper. Even though he is a 4☆, he needs to work on control and his Bball IQ. I think Golding is exactly what this kid needs. I don't see this kid as an impact player his 1st year, but we can build around him.
We have a team, fellas. Who ever else Golding picks up is icing on the cake.
-
My only real concern is he clearly didn't have to work very hard in high school to dominate. Has he accepted the need to work 100% every minute at this level? It's hard to imagine a highly pursued kid like this going to play for Golding if he wasn't willing to hustle though. It's what Golding's ACU team was known for.

I thought the same thing. Kid looked like a man among boys in high-school. I saw his footwork was poor, but made up for it with athleticism & energy. I saw he only averaged minutes a game at Georgetown last year. I'm thinking he struggles on defense. He'll be a project, but a fun one to watch.

Roster Run Down:
1) Bieniemy
2) Boum
3) Kennedy
4) Sibley
5) Verhoeven
Satterfield, Agnew, Giffa, & White are combo guard back ups.
Onyema & Bonke are the big man back ups.
This is no longer a ground and pound team. This is a run & gun team. Looking at a Golding team from the past, he likes lean quick kids that can run & get easy buckets, grab steals, & stay tight on D.
-
Looked at a lot if video on our kids & here is what I think about our players & team.
Bieniemy- solid PG with good ball skills who can find the open man. He needs to improve on his shooting.
Giffa- also good ball skills and good defense. We shall see about shooting.
Boum- great scorer. Needs to work on control
Saterfield- defense, rebounding, & toughness is what he does well. Scoring looks OK, but on JUCO level
Agnew- also has control issues like Boum, but he is a spark plug on D & an OK rebounder
Kennedy- super athleticism & energy & a good rebounder. Needs to find a way to score
Sibley- like Kennedy has energy & athleticism. OK jumper & lane driving. D is a big ?
Maring- height & shot bocking are good, but footwork & short jumper Needs work
Onyema- hungry kid that can jump out of the building, but his D, footwork, & Bball IQ needs work
Verhoeven- good at rebounding & protecting the paint, needs work on scoring
White- he has height for a guard, but that's all I know
Overall I give the team a B-. We have a guy who can coach and some very good athleticism. I hope we can put it together.
-
Can we distribute a little of TV and JB basketball IQ amongst the rest?
I have said this already, but I'm so hoping we can create isolation opportunities for Boum to shoot and for Kennedy and Onyema to drive the lane.
-
Williams posted he will be going to Texas Tech. I think that is best case scenario for him. I wish him all the luck in the world.
-
I wish him well. He is now part of the past. I wish those who lay it on the line for UTEP the very best and that includes those who chose to remain to do their best, here at UTEP. I respect those who never considered leaving and those who opened the door to check but found that home was here.
By the way, I want to be the first one to say that I think we will see an entirely different Verhoeven. I think he is going to play with much more aggression and looking to impose his will. He had to dever to Williams. Now he will become the force. There is a reason he stayed and it wasn?t to be a second banana anymore. He was told to be ready to be a man. The man. That is why Boum is going to be better, too. Each player who stayed will be much better. Coach is going to return a balance to the offense that was all screwed up under Terry. That balance, matched with discipline and precision is going to be a fricken fiesta for fans and even more so for the players. The Miners are going to be very good.
-
I agree Ky. Golding is a players coach who knows how to get the best out of his players and he knows the Xs and Os unlike the last coach which I can't even remember his name. Ah Terry, now I remembered was/is mainly a recruiter but not a REAL coach. He's like the third stringer on a team only there if the others are hurt or missing. I wish him luck but I'm glad he's gone as we would never have had amounted to anything with him at the helm.
I can't wait for August when we start seeing all the sports teams.
-
I hope the best for BW. Next up.
I hope Golding can implement an offense that makes the best use of the talent we have. Open looks for Boum and Saterfield, one on one facing the basket opportunities for Kennedy, Onyema, and Sibley.
-
I was watching vids of Sibley & doing comparisons to Williams. If you think Sibley is replacing Williams, you are dead wrong. They both are completely different players.
Sibley- long, lean, quick, can jump out of the building, has good lift when shooting, OK shooter, can run & down the floor all night, and has lots of energy. Taking an educated guess that his D is piss poor, however the kid is quick to pass out when doubled.
Williams- great at posting up, strong, pivots well, better at defending the post, is pretty good at rebounding, & is a master with his back to the rim. Downsides are he disappears often & gets in foul trouble.
This is a classic case of PF v SF. While UTEP doesn't have a proven PF, Golding likes to play fast and 2 SF instead of a PF is what we are going to see.
While Sibley doesn't have the experience of Williams, his athleticism & ability to pass makes up for it. UTEP's defense will need to be tight to make up for strength in the middle. I'm curious what other players Golding will bring. Fans keep complaining we don't have enough size, but that is a very old school way of looking at the game. The game is quicker & long shooting. Just ask Baylor.
-
Take a look at the attachment I found on Twitter. Missing White, Bieniemy, & Giffa. Good to see them bonding. Kids are looking fit.
-
New player announced. incoming freshman. 6-9 Kevin Kalu. Goes hard to the hole, appears to rebound aggresively. We will see how he adjusts over time, don't expect too much from a freshman. But we needed more warm bodies in the paint.
-
I saw some of his vids. The kid is strong. If Golding puts him in this year, his primary job will be to rebound & keep the paint clear. He will foul hard & early, because he is not ised to the speed of D1 play.
I also figured that any kid Goldings between now & game time will not be starter quality. I like our team. Again, the only starter that didn't return was Williams. While we lost some inside scoring, we gained speed & perimeter shooting.
-
This Hollins transfer is a great pick up. 6'6" athletic kid with 1yr of eligibility. We have a serious team. We had a serious team last year, but didn't have the coaching support to bring it together. Can Golding do it? Well...he's off to a good start.
-
Man, I can't wait 'til basketball season. It's looking like we might have a bonafide good team, anyway, I'm hoping. I would love to see my Miners go dancing this year. That's my goal for them.
-
While football continues to be looking like they are much improved, I want to go over the roster especially since it looks like Golding is done recruiting for this season. Here is a brief analysis on each player and where I think they should line up in regards to starting.
Senior
Hollins 6'6" The kid brings great experience from a very good Oregon St team. Kid can do it all and may start at SF.
Junior
Boum 6'3" This is our best scoring threat that can rebound. Energy is through the roof. Needs to improve long ball.
Bieniemy 6'5" Good control and vision. Needs to use his long body to drive and improve on shot percentage.
Agnew 6'2" Defense and energy is his forte. Will always be a backup unless his shooting & free throws improve.
Verho 6'9" Defending & rebounding was his strength, but it looks like Golding working on his scoring. We shall see.
Sophomore
Kennedy 6'5" Very athletic and good defense. Needs to find out how to score or he will be playing back up.
Saterfield 6'4" I hear the kid scores lights out and defends well. If he keeps it up, he will start.
Maring 6'10" Won't be an impact player yet, but I hear his athleticism & strength is good. He will learn a lot this year.
Freshies
Sibley 6'8" I like to compare to JWash. While his offense is better his D may need some help. Long wing player.
Onyema 6'8" I got word he may have grown a bit more and is closer to 6'10". I like him as our future PF. Keep working young man, because those explosive dunks have us all excited.
Giffa 6'1" I've seen he has good ball skills and is quick. He'll be a good back up to Bieniemy or may beat him if he can score. UTEP needs a PG that can score.
Kalu 6'9" The kid is strong and defends the paint well. He'll need to catch up with D1 speed. He might red shirt.
As I have said before, the only starter we lost was Williams. Verho will fill a little of his scoring while SF/SG should make up the rest. I like multiple scoring options than just Williams & Boum. New kids I saw can score now are Saterfield, Sibley, & Hollins.
Starters:
C Verho- if Onyema, Mering, & Kalu are behind, Verho will get that position. He may move to PF if he can score
SF Hollins- Don't think Golding will play a true PF most of the time. Hollins will play O from the wing & help D in paint
SF Kennedy- D, rebounding, & energy he wins. If he continues offensive woes, Sibley may get the nod to start
SG Boum- No brainer. He's our best player
PG Bieniemy- Good control, long, & got better on D as the season went on. He needs to step up scoring
I feel Hollins/Sibley/Kennedy will rotate at SF while Boum/Saterfield/Bieniemy will rotate as guards. Agnew may never start, but is the perfect 6th man. Giffa may turn some heads, but I don't think he or Kalu are ready for D1 speed at this time. Onyema & Maring will get there chances when we need to play big.
There will be more offensive outlets for Golding than Terry had. Actually Terry did have many scorers, he just didn't know how to run a better offense to set up the weapons he had. I'm thinking Golding has plans for all positions scoring, which may screw Kennedy out of a starting position if he doesn't shoot or drive better.
Golding defense is a quick swarming defense. He will rotate out a lot of kids, because defense requires so much energy. I'm also willing to bet Golding uses a 9-10 man rotation average come conference play.
I'm not expecting any post season play, but I better see an improved identity than what Terry had. I also don't see us playing against Kansas very well. I'm just hoping 1 or 2 players will make a name for themselves after that game.
The 2 new players I have my eyes on are Saterfield & Sibley. I think those 2 have fantastic talent. The player I expect to see better improvement on is Verho. If he can get to double digit scoring more often than not, he will impact this team. The player that may see more bench than before is Kennedy. I hope I'm wrong, but I think we have seen his ceiling. Without scoring & Golding's swarming defense, he may be on the transfer portal if he can't find a way to score.
There you have it. I can't wait until the season starts.
-
Curious whether your comments regarding the new kids are based on seeing them play on campus?
I feel like Bienemy has a lot more potential than he was allowed to show within our previous offense.
Both Saterfield or Kennedy should get a lot of PT. There should be a lot of substitutions. It may just be who is hot on a given day.
-
I did not see them play live. My analysis is based on YouTube vids, kidd annual average numbers, & the very few contacts I have on campus.
-
An analogy please. Terry coached a jazz ensemble with Williams the star. Golding leads a barber shop quintet. Golding is a control freak and his control comes from precision and movement creating shots I could make and leaving defensive players blinking with their hands up wondering what was supposed to happen, there. Having said that, I think he is going to make TV a star. He is closest and tallest to the basket. Reach out and drop the ball in. I think Boum is going to be option number two, but not from beyond the arc first. First will be the short jumper or layup. Remember, open, precision nobody to defend layup. then, it is filling in by mixing it up to keep opponents off guard and running the legs into lead. Bienemy can't shoot but does a lot of other things well. Golding will have him making open layups. Agnew and Kennedy will get theirs by playing defense and the fast breaks from it. Golding will get the most out of his players because he will put them in position to play the most basketball minute for minute to be most successful. I am not explaining it well. You have some bosses that are assholes but they are damned effective and then you have some that aren't effective. Also you have some bosses that are cool and they are effective and some that aren't effective. The ineffective ones fall off. The effective assholes do well. The effective cool bosses lead people who would go to war for and with them. They can be crazy good. I think Golding has that to an extent. How much? We will see very quickly I would guess.
-
A great example of this is back in the 80s I watched some of the NM girls state tournament basketball games.
There was a team from one of the reservations. The tallest girl may have been around 5-5, but not even sure she was that tall. Other teams had 6 footers at center.
This team ran a complex motion offense with screens and back door cuts that resulted in a ton of wide open layups and wide open outside shots. They absolutely destroyed the other teams defenses. They had no size but they had quickness and precision execution I have rarely seen in high school.
A good coach designs an offense to maximize his players skills and create high percentage opportunities. I am hoping to see that again. Terry was Rabs 2.0. He had an offense with plays and things that someone smart gave him. Why wasn't he winning? Must have been the players failure to execute.
