  • Looks like Golding offered a 6'10" JUCO from Houston. I saw some film on the kid & he is very athletic. We need a few more like him.

  • That's a good size. What classification is he? How many years can we play him?

  • Well, thinking harder on kids coming. I forget nCAA allowed 2020 to be a year no one gains a classification. So...I'm guessing a 2yr JUCO can come in as a Sophomore & be eligible for 3yrs.

  • Is there any kind of deadline we are up against for signing Jucos, D1 transfers, or incoming freshmen?

  • I'm no expert on time frames, but we have picked up kids in the past right before the season started. Those were special circumstances. The time to get kids is now while talent is available. Most of this stuff is virtual, so I hope Golding & company are thinking outside the box. An example might be to do virtual from The Don with banners in the background with team playing Dodge Ball. Maybe background video loop of The Don rockin.

  • This guy was all district for D in High School. The kid looks like he has a lot energy. He's gonna need it. I guess he is Goldings 1st recruit at UTEP. If you're not including the kids he had to convince to stay. We need 2 more big guys & a few shooters.
    Get it done, Golding.

  • So I was looking @ more film on Mering. A lot are breakaway dunks, but there is a lot to show that the kid is good with his hands. He controlled a lot of quick passes & odd angled rebounds for a score. I think I read he is 40% from 3. I also saw quite a few 12 footers he made. He is a natural shooter.
I think we have a diamond in the rough here. At least I hope we do. Overall, he & Onyema need to work together well since Onyema has 4yrs &  Mering has 3.

  • I think there's a lot of raw athleticism in the paint.  Both bigs have the potential to be very dangerous in pick and roll, where they are in motion.  Both strong to the hoop.  Saw some video with Mering showing a nice drop step.  You seal your defender off with that and it's game over.  Anyone remember Lechner at Wyo?  Deadly with that.  Less confident about Onyema in a back to the basket situation.  Can they play D?

Shooting may be OK if we can create better opportunities for Boum and Kennedy.  I find it really hard to believe that Kennedy is as bad as his shooting was last year.  I wonder if it won't be better in a better offense.

Agnew very energetic and aggressive defensively.

Bienemy needs some confidence.  I liked him early but it seemed like he fell apart as the year progressed.  No matter what, need a quality backup PG.

I just really hope all our guards issues was the lack of a legit offensive plan.  I think no one knew what was expected of them.  IMO, CRT wanted them to play disciplined while not providing any real guidance.  Imagine trying to run an offense in a pickup game.  Kind of what it felt like.

  • We have the 1-3 covered & just need back ups. Bieniemy, Agnew, Boum, & Kennedy will be much improved come 2021-22 season & we should have them for 2022-23. I seriously love that. If I'm not mistaken, Clardy & White are staying & will get some good defensive training. They don't need to score, they need to be defensive specialists if they get playing time.
Boum- flat out scorer & needs to work on control.
Bieniemy- controls the floor well & is OK on D, but needs better shot frequency.
Agnew- an explosive player that is great on D, but also needs to be better at shooting.
Kennedy- good D & rebounder. Also needs to find a way to score.
Then there is the post. Mering has game time experience, but not at D1 level. Onyema saw little playing time, but was explosive on O. Golding will help both play D. We actually don't need them to be scorers, except to make the obvious dunks. If they are not going to score, they need to be good with passing out. Williams was not very good with passing out when he was dbl teamed. I hope Onyema learned some of those post moves. Verho was good @ D only. I think Onyema will do OK at the 5 while Mering, being the more versatile player, should play the 4.
We need 3 more big guys & 2 more shooters.

  • I'm reading on the other site that Williams interviewed with Golding. I think it is cute, but since Williams can go to any school he wants, he will be gone.
If for some crazy reason he stays, then that tells me a few things.
    1) I have no idea what I'm talking about & need to re-evaluate my thought process on recruits.
    2) Golding can recruit his ass off.
    3) I will gladly eat crow.

I will say this, Golding picked up a 7' kid to play for ACU & beat TX. The kid was meh, but Golding coached him up & he played his Ars off against 5☆ talent & won.
What I'm saying is, Golding puts a good product on the floor because he a good coach, knows how to win, & it seems he has a better relationship with the players than the last few coaches.
So, I don't think we should worry about the end product, but how quick will the turn around be?

He reminds me of Gillespie. He is a control freak. He is about to teach them how to dance. Each step and with precision and relentless in your face defense. Trouble is getting talented players to play this way. It is really hard work and much of the fun of just jamming is gone. But it is a winning way if players buy in. I think he might be able to sell ice in Alaska.

  • Some interesting news. BJ Maxwell 6'4" SG is being recruited by Golding. The kid was released from ACU for violating school conduct policy. He was released along with J.Friday 6'9". Friday in 2019 committed to NMSU in 2019, but I'm not sure that stuck. Maxwell is a good shooter & a great passer. If Golding can pick him up, he would blend nicely into the 1-3 rotation. Im Not sure what they did, but Caracter & Archie got a 2nd chance here & it changed there lives for the better. I hope we get him. That Friday kid was a D. Character type of player. Heavy bodied dominant in the paint type player. I hope he is also on Golding's radar. Both eligible for 1yr only.
