  • I was just curious to know if there was anything to know about UTEP football recruiting.  Here is what I found.  We are nationally ranked 131(take a wild guess how many teams there are in FBS Div. 1) while last year we ranked 112.  In C_USA we were ranked 12th and this year we are ranked 14.  I am sure that all of this could change.  We have 11 signed letters of intent.

Willie Eldridge RB 3* from Cy Ranch Cyprus Hill TX
Tyrice Knight  ILB 3* Independence CC Independence KS
Dresden McIver DT 3* Veterans Memorial SA TX
Ian James OT 2*  Aubrey Aubrey TX
Dennis Barnes  CB  2*  Fort Scott CC Ft. Scott KS
Khalid Warfield  Ath  2*  Antonian College Prep SA TX
Kelton Moss  DT  2*  DT  Kilgore CC  Kilgore TX
Deylon Williams  ILB  2* Independence CC Independence KS
Verenzo Holmes  CB  2*   NW Miss CC  Sematobia MS
Keenan Stewart  DT  2*  Iowa Western CC Council Bluffs Iowa
Jadrian Taylor  SDE  2*  Kilgore CC  Kilgore TX

    Hard Commits
Kiante Liggins  ILB  3*  Andress HS  EP TX

    Transfer
    Q Drennan  WR   2*   UNM

Something to chew the fat over.  Looks like Dimel is going after JC kids, a lot.  Price told me you hope that half of them pan out.

Of interest, the site shows all commits from the past and it is very interesting to see the number of ranked players from the Price years in the higher rankings.

  • Well, Dimel has redshirted his classes I assume.  That means his first class are redshirt sophomores and last years class are redshirt freshmen.  Bringing in jc players would allow him to have some players with some experience and maybe a year older?  But, it also tells me that he has decided that he has to win this year so he is gambling on the jc players to help rather than depending on what he has in house.  As I said, coaches only expect 50% of their jc players to pan out.

Three recruits are offense and eight are defense.  The running back and the OT are Texas high school kids.  Cy Ranch produces good football players and he is rated 3 stars.  That is probably a good get, especially for the future.  The other offensive play, I am assuming, who is listed as Ath will probably be a receiver or maybe used in the defensive backfield.  Just a guess.  But, more clearly, he has tried to do something on the defensive side of the ball with seven of the eight defensive players being jc players.

I'm sure many would agree that the defense needed to be better.  Personally, I believe it was the offense that needed to be better, but true to form, I believe he thinks his offense is just fine.  I am now days trying to refrain from negative, insulting comments about the powers that be and so I will leave it at that.  Digging a little deeper he is bringing in 4 defensive linemen, 2 inside linebackers and a couple of cornerbacks.  Hopefully, we can come up with a pass rush and stop the long runs.  Also, the cb's might help stop giving up long completions on third downs.  Again, it appears that Dimel thinks the offense is just dandy just the way it is.

  • Signing Day is Wednesday, so we?ll see how it develops.

In Dimel?s very first class he signed a lot of HS O-Linemen, so he tried to address that early and it is understandable that as a result, he might now be signing more D-linemen than O-linemen.

Last year Dimel started his recruiting class with some 3 stars(Hankins, Goodwin) and then ended with some 3 stars in the final weeks(Broussard, Rudolph, Wilson).  This year doesn?t seem to have the same momentum at the end of class as last year had.

Dimel and staff have been hitting the state of Arizona this year with more offers than I can ever remember for that state.  One issue is that UNM has a new staff and their new coach is from Arizona State, so they are appearing to be a top competitor for some of these AZ kids that Dimel has offered.

On the positive side, I do think that Dimel has now signed a high quality RB two years in a row(Hankins and Eldridge).

UTEP is always going to be a difficult recruiting job(it always has been), so we will always have to recruit more of the guys that can maybe project into good D1 players 3 or 4 years from now.  That becomes a risky proposition for a coach, because so many kids are now transferring quicker, a number of kids simply won?t pan out, and it also takes a coach willing to invest in kids who might not pay off until 3 years from now, when that coach needs to win today(like Dimel does).  We went heavy on JC defensive guys, but I would expect almost all of our HS signee?s on Wednesday to become either blue/grey/red shirt guys who might not pay off for us until 3 or 4 years from now(and they might not even be playing until whoever our next coach is, if Dimel can?t show improvement).

  • UTEP is always going to be a difficult recruiting job(it always has been),

I'm kind of on the fence on this.  I think UTEP is hard to recruit to because we suck, and because it has a really bad perception across the rest of Texas.  I've had plenty of people be downright rude when I say I'm from EP.  But if people will go play in Boise and Provo and Stillwater OK, they would come to EP if they thought it would help them go on to the next level.

  • Success breeds success.  Players like winning.  Losing sucks.  Players like to be winners.  Players, good ones. hate being losers.  Players will go anywhere in the country to be winners.  Players won't go anywhere in the country to be losers.  Alabama.  Clemson.  Spokane.  I'm not saying these are bad places, but they aren't The Magic Kingdom either.  Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Baltimore.  You can get killed there, not El Paso.  Winners want to win, with other winners they can.  Win.  Winning is what gets you on national tv.  Winning.  Losing to winners doesn't get you on national tv-except as a loser to a winner.  Winning is cool.  Losing sucks dripping green donkey dicks.  Winners want to be cool and don't want to suck dripping green donkey dicks.  Players want to play for winning coaches not coaches who suck dripping green donkey dicks.  I am not going to say what Dimel wipes off his lips and chin just before he walks into a recruits house for a visit.  But his only pitch is you can start immediately if you can beat out the other kid and help us not to be a loser.  God help him if the kid asks if he can show him how to be a winner.  They do.  Winners want to play in the NFL.  They ask, can you get me to the NFL.  What is his answer?  I know someone who can.  I coached players.  As a head coach, they ask?  Football is their dream job.  Can he get them there?  Yes or no?  Think about the players that made it to the NFL.  Who was their head coach?
