  • Who is the best 3 point shooter we have had at UTEP?  In my mind, it's not as simple as looking at the % stats.  Who was absolutely money when we needed that shot?

Candidates off the top of my head, add your own.

    Chris Craig
    Omar Duran
    Chris Blocker
    Prince Stewart

  • Good addition.  Once nominations quiet down I will put this as a poll.  Too bad Luster was pre- 3 point era.

  • Randy Culpepper

RANDY CULPEPPER 6-0 | GUARD MEMPHIS, TENN.
It took Randy Culpepper only two years to become UTEP’s all-time leader for three point field goals made in a season (89 in 2008-09) and a career.  He closed out his career rated among the UTEP and C-USA leaders in scoring, field goals (782), three-pointers (318) .345%, free throws (456) and steals (251).  Culpepper was chosen the 2008 Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year and the 2010 C-USA Player of the Year.

Omega Harris ranks second in 3 pointers with 174 .388%

Culpepper may have been so good at the 3 point shot that it may have diminished the drama somewhat.  Throw in tomahawk dunks from the little guy and he may be the best we ever had but isn't even on most of our radars.  Tony Barbee was and is not our guy like The Bear, but he was pretty incredible with the guys he brought with him from Memphis.

  • I think the idea of who was most clutch is so hard to evaluate.  Like which three points was it that won a game-the one at the end or the one to end a half, or any other made shot during the game.  Add to that the fact that the game has changed so much.  The Bear wasn't big on the three pointer in his time.  He believed in working the ball on offense to tire the opponents defense and then hit a layup.  Barbee was all about throwing it up and crashing the boards for a dunk, with Culpepper throwing bombs from beyond the three point line because everyone was inside and Randy was wide open.  I remember Hall being brought in specifically for his ability to shoot the 3 pointer and yet even though he was a leader at the time, I bet he didn't shoot or make half as many 3 point shots as Culpepper.  The same with Craig, for sure.  Haskins would have benched someone for shooting bombs away, although he had a chance to watch Culpepper do it and that must have been something.  You know he would have worn Character out! lol

  • Mark Ingles:  In his Senior year, he made 3.0 three pointers per game on 45% shooting.

For his UTEP career he shot 43.9% from 3 point land and made 2.5 three's per game.

That's why I worded the question this way.  Otherwise we just look up stats and say this guy had the highest percentage made and we're done.  But some guys seem to just have a knack for being that guy that hits the right shot at the right time to break a game open or hit the winning shot.

  • If he was playing the aggies, it may not have been lost.  It may have been stolen!  I hope he found it!

  • Luster Goodwin would have been the best but there was no 3 point shot at that time.

Not really fair to say that. No 3 point line meant little perimeter shooting, which means little perimeter defense. Pistol Pete Maravich was a perimeter shooting God because no one defended him at 20+ footers. When the 3pt shot was introduced, it pushed for various perimeter defenses which never existed.
The best 3 point shooter question comes with a responsibility of including the perimeter defense.
