  • It's sad and hard times when getting into the conf tourney is the goal. But, it is what it is.

So here's the standings and next scheduled games for the last pod, teams 11-14.

La Tech, Floida Atlantic, Florida Int'l, Marshalll all tied at 6-7.

    Rice    5-8        @ Florida Atlantic
    MTSU  5-8        @ Marshall
    UTEP  3-10       @ So. Miss
    Charlotte 3-10    @ Old Dominion

For us to make the top 12 of 14 teams, I think we have a chance if we win 4 out 5. And get some help with others losing. So Miss appears to be must win, IMO.

The Fat-Lady hasn't sung yet... technically there's still a chance. One can only hope. Anyone believe in miracles?

  • I like where things are headed, but I'm good if we dont go. It would make a better story that this team did qualify for a crappy conference tourney, but make top 25 next year. It would be great.

  • Thomas plays 11min while Gilyard & Magee play under dbl digit minutes. Terry goes on after show stating he played kids who will be here next year. A friend of mi e saw that coming & I bet him an expensive bottle of tequila he was wrong.
Who do we have as shooters next year? I only see Vila since he was trained that way in Spain. Zarzuela & Wenzel will be rookies, Boum & Archie are supposed to help there, but they didnt in there stint in NCAA play, & Hawkins and Lathon are not shooters. Stroud is no shooter & everyone else is a big man.
While I have no doubt our inside game will be fantastic, I have a feeling we will get killed on deep ball games with low % on the 3's.

  • Boum shot .362 from 3PT with 130 attempts as a Freshman. Gilyard is at .374 on 131 attempts this year as a Sophomore, so they're close to statistically even.  Gilyard shot .292 from 3PT as a Frosh. On paper, Boum could be a step up, plus he's 6 inches taller. Hawkins and Lathon have room to improve, but shot comparatively to Gilyard his freshman year from 3pt land, Lathon slightly better at .312. Wenzel looks to be best pure shooter, but as a freshman, not much can be expected. Magee's 3pt stats fell from .425 to .333 this year.

I had expected Gilyard to be back, but after those post game comments I have my doubts too. Especially after Gilyard had to sit out a half for a disciplinary issue. (not sure what it was though).

Vila is shooting 44% from 3PT in 11 games of conference JC play at 11-25, so he doesn't jack it up that much. His year long average from 3 is 33.9%. I'll be nice to have a big guy who can shoot from the perimeter.

  • Thanks for the stats ATL. I had my doubts on Boums shooting, because all clips I've seen on him are his speed in getting to the rim. Terry has been pushing William's so much it seems like a second coming of Derek Caracter. Let'shope so.
The surprise pick up for me was Archie. That kid is a true SF & wants to be the best player on the floor. He had small room for error at TCU, which is why he came here.

  • I think we are all tired of hearing "next year." Since the bileggining of the year, we all knew this year was to concentrate on player development. However, I didnt expect not making the CUSA tournament.

  • I hope for much improvement next year, while still recognizing the team will be young.  I will be disappointed if we are not top 4 in conference.  The following year, his first freshmen will be juniors and we will see whether they have improved as players by that time.  If we are not seriously competing for conference title in year 3, CRT is not getting it done.

As far as the NCAA tourney, it is now a situation where every team from the power conferences will get in, and only the tourney champion from every other conference makes it.  Conf tourneys are weird things and hard for even a dominant team to win.  Non power schools need to just Brexit from the NCAA and have their own organization and tourney that maybe has some integrity instead of continuing to fight each other for the last puff on the cigar thrown on the ground by the power conferences.

  • I agree.  I have been saying we need to stop schilling for the bigs and become the AFL of college basketball.  Name champions and as far as I am concerned, seeding is bullshit.  Everyone trying to put the fix in.  Committees, rankings, formulas, etc.  Top 2 teams from the conferences, random pairings other than against conference mates, and claim a national champion.  Pull the Madness from March.  Then the money would be there for a playoff game or set of three between the two champs.  One upset and it becomes instant legend.

  • I just abhor the term "Power Schools". We in what has been relegated to a Group of 5 have some of the blame for that. If we start calling them the Cabal then people will see that these schools/conferences are actually going the Cabal route. I will never call them Power schools, Cabal is the term to be used.

If the Cabal can actually agree to giving automatic seeding to us then they should allow the regular conference champ and the tourney champ to the Dance. I'm surprised that the presidents of non-Cabal schools don't raise a stink. Maybe our new president can start the process.

    100% agree.  Cabal it is.
