Phil Johnson was named UTEP’s interim men’s basketball coach on Tuesday morning, following the retirement of Tim Floyd.

“Larry Eustachy was the National Coach of the Year and worked for me,” Floyd said following Monday’s game versus Lamar. “I had another guy, John Brady, who was at LSU and was the National Coach of the Year. He worked for me. Randy Bennett has done the best job in the United States at Saint Mary’s University, a very, very difficult place. He worked for me. Kermit Davis worked for me. Phil Johnson is better than all of those guys.”

Pretty bold statement here.  Thoughts?

Then why hasn't anyone offered him a HC job somewhere else? Why did he only last 3 years at San Jose State and get a total of 19 wins?? He's a friend of Floyd and has basically been by his side most of Floyd's career. I understand trying to push one of your best friends, but Johnson isn't that good, IMHO.
Naturally, we get to see first hand the rest of this season.

This is his audition.  If we suddenly play lights out and win the conference tourney and make the NCAA, then he probably deserves a shot.  Less than that and I would want someone with a more convincing resume

This is EXACTLY how I feel. I hope he does HIS OWN thing and not try to clone Floyd's style.

I would tell them to have fun out there but to also play defense. I'd say if they play defense too I'd keep the reins off and let them play free. I would know that I wouldn't have a chance at being the head coach and with a new head coach comes a completely new system so why try to install a Floyd clone system when I'd know that it was going out the window.
