  • I feel like the fcs game is probably a win. After that, I don?t see any guaranteed wins. If I try, I can put on my orange welding goggles and hope against my belief that you are right and the team is better and we can win some games. I can very easily see us losing all but the fcs game(and a loss wouldn?t be a shock). But let?s be positive and say we win four.  Someone tell me who the four teams are. I am thinking that we get our normal three win season. Just because we always find away to fuck shit up even if it has to be some ther team?s shit.

Last season didn?t instill any confidence in UTEP football fans for sure. However, my pitiful little brain insists on looking for rays of hope. So, I?m banking on a second straight CUSA number 1 recruiting class bringing more talent and the hoped for growth and improvement of last years recruits. More depth, more size, more experience will (maybe) give us an improved team.

I?m looking forward to your annual season prediction thread and I expect I?ll find 6 or 7 wins on that schedule. My optimism didn?t survive the second game last year. We?ll see how it goes this year.

  • Man, I hope I am wrong. I am going to need a few days before posting it as I have never felt less confident in picking and scores are throwing darts with my eyes closed. Btw, I have not sent out mojo and sis prizes. I am old and I wish that was a valid excuse. I have none. But I haven?t forgotten.

  • These are our UTEP football Miners.  They can find any way to lose to any team.  I am still of the opinion that with an upgrade in O line, WR, and QB the offense will look a lot better.  I don't know whether we have upgraded those things or not, but as MiW says, there is reason for cautious optimism with the recruiting classes.  IF those things have improved we could win 6.  If not, then yeah 2-3 wins.

Remind me, did we change special teams coordinator?

No on the special teams coordinator but we do have a new OC and a new TE coach and a new WR coach.

  • Rumor now that the Cowboys will be hiring JJ Clark, our DC, as a defensive assistant. He has been a bright spot on the coaching staff, IMO, considering the inefficient offense left the defense on the field way too much.

  • I'm with miw, hoping that with the no.1 recruiting class in cusa will get us a different team. I'm a Utep fan and I'm a realist and know that Utep will always be Utep and we follow them because, well, we're addicted. The football team is like your grandson playing sports, you know they aren't good but you'll still root for them otherwise you're a bad grandparent. We expect the team to suck, I know it's sounds mean but what the heck, if that's what you get year after year why would you expect us to think otherwise. It's sad but it's true.

I saw the schedule and like Ky I don't expect many wins, maybe 3 or 4.

    *sigh*

Good Lord, that?s 7 wins. Are you ok?

I?m wondering about Jax St and Sammy. Both lost their coaches and may have lost a good number of players.

Well, I did have knee replacement surgery recently.  Maybe the pain meds did the planting?

JJ Clark?s replacement, our new DC, is Bobby Daly, Montana St DC. Had a very good defense there but was the DC at MSU for 1 year and LB coach for 5 years. So the Miners head into the 2025 season with 2 new coordinators. Hope it works out well.

  • I think the main question is on the recruiting.  Are these players as good on turf as they are on paper?  How soon will they be ready to play?

Coaching definitely makes a difference, but it can't overcome really poor players.  Haskins had teams with losing records in the 70s.  He didn't just forget how to coach during those years.  Haskins was probably good for 5 wins more than his players were capable of on their own.

On the other hand, I'd speculate that if you took one of the top 5 teams in the country and placed them in CUSA with a horrible coach they'd still win conference.  Given the range of talent in CUSA, a good coach might win 2-3 more games than his talent, and a bad coach might lose 2-3 more games (football).

What I'm saying here is that a 6-6 team talent-wise might have 4 wins with a bad coach and 8 with a good coach.

So if we have the top talent in the conference by a significant margin, which we may not in '25 due to them being young, but should have in '26 and beyond, we ought to be bowl eligible every year regardless of the coaches.  There's a lot of IFs here, but its better than continuing to stare into the abyss.   Basketball is a different story.
