  • This according to sports writer Pete Thamel. He says sources say there is mutual interest and a decision is expected soon.

  • The MWC website says it has officially welcomed UTEP into the conference.  They will start in the 2026-2027 season.

    Texas State may be next.

  • Well, Utep has been wanting to go there for I don't know how long. I wonder if it'll benefit us or not with some teams from there wanting to leave to more fertile grounds. But, it's done and we'll be gone soon from Cusa.

I liked Cusa and the teams that we played but I think most fans want to play teams that we know of already. At least Unlv and AF haven't left yet but who knows when we hear that they are leaving.

  • They all signed long term agreements (through 2032) with really large penalties for leaving.  It'll be stable for a while.

Not so sure that CUSA will be stable.  ACC is due to implode and that will have a domino effect that will likely see CUSA destabilized.  Also MWC currently at least has a much better media deal and we should have reduced travel costs.   It's almost for sure a better basketball league and at least equal in football I think

UNLV, New Mexico, Air Force, Wyoming, Nevada, San Jose St, Hawaii and they will be adding more.

  • The two conferences should combine.

  • A merger might well make the strongest G5 conference in all sports.  It makes a lot of sense to have a mega-western conference that's not vulnerable.

But there may be financial downsides to that.  It would probably invalidate the exit fees of the departing teams -- Not the teams leaving MWWC for PAC, but the teams leaving PAC like UCLA, USC, etc.  A merger might need to wait a few years.

But I really like the idea of a 2 division PAC/MWC.  There are probalby discussions behind the scenes.

  • The idea is great Sisy but I don't think the Pac will want to downgrade to our level. Even though Oregon st. and Wash St weren't so great that everyone snubbed their nose at them they think very highly of themselves...and now the ones from the Mwc that left think the same, even though they're still G5 in my mind.

I think a more feasible idea is a merger between Cusa and Mwc. We could have regional conferences and play the winner of each division, the east and western divisions. A sort of mini-playoff with the winner going to the P6 (is that what they call the chosen one going to the prestigious big money bowl games?)

  • I think the MWC attitude towards merging with CUSA is the same as you describe PAC-MWC.

The difference is that both PAC and MWC are struggling to meet the minimum # of full teams required.  Both are at 7 and need 8.  They can add someone but if anything happens they're back fighting for survival.  Bump that up to 14 or 16 and you're not worried anymore.

But yes, PAC definitely views the remaining MWC teams as weak sisters or they would have grabbed them in the first place.  They thought they were getting UNLV but that didn't work out and now they're sweating a bit.

  • The Mac and cusa probably will merge. With UTEP going and probably nmsu too maybe tx st and Sam to the mwc because WKU and mtsu were trying to get into the MAC not long ago. That would leave Liberty having to go probably to the mac o  try maybe aac?  Point is, this shit is nowhere close to being settled.

Well, Tex St already told the Mwc no thanks so they're out.
