I have too much time on my hands. It is one reason why I write what I write. Going back to the KU game and looking at the box score you find that UTEP shot the ball 60 times and Kansas shot 56 shots. UTEP took 23 3 point shots and KU took 20 we made 3 they made 6. But, Kansas shot 53% field goal percentage(that includes the 6 for 20 from 3, so inside the arc the percentage is even higher) and we shot 31%. That 31% is carrying 13% from 3 point range.
Too much time, like I said.
I did a little figuring. Let's say each team gets 60 possessions a game. Forty-five percent times sixty times two equals fifty=four.
Then thirty-five percent times fifty plus twenty-five percent times ten times three equals forty-two point five.
Basically, this is how KU beat the shit out of us. We, the Miners couldn't stop them from hitting layups while we missed those. We played three guards and two forwards. You would think that we had the advantage in the paint. You would expect the forwards to abuse the guards. Nope. Well, you would expect the Miners to take advantage of the mismatch, right. Nope, we shoot a bunch of threes. You know how threes come off of the backboard when they are missed. They go out far enough to make for open outlet passes to speedy guards for uncontested layups.
Kansas' guards didn't have to hit threes to score 20 points each. They did it inside the arc. We, have forwards for what reason. They don't rebound. Agnew led the Miners with 7. Kalu had 4. TV had 2,Hollins 2, Sibley 2 and Bonk 1. That is the forwards versus KU's four guards. The forwards totaled 11 points, I think. Forwards versus guards and they grabbed 11 rebounds and 11 points. To me, that doesn't make any sense at all. A basketball coach should be able to do something about that,or I figure it indicates that the coach is alright with it and the problem in his eyes lies somewhere else. Damned if I know.
My first thought was, well fuck, if we aren't going to use the forwards like forwards. if they aren't playing strong, play four guards. But we don't have them either. It is why I wonder if I'm just nuts when I look at the roster and their bio's. And let me be clear. Over the years I got to know quite a few of the athletes and they are some of the finest people you could ever want to meet.
I feel like I am being too hard on the team. But, I just can't make sense of any of it. I love defensive basketball. The Bear taught us well. But, you have to score points to win. We somehow seem to be really good at making it hard on the other team but at the expense of not being able to do anything but that. Like we are really annoying. Can't do any damage, just annoying as fuck. We are like knats.
