We Missed A Chance But At Least We Didn?t Pull a Dimel

  • I had held out a dim hope that Senter and Wilson would use basketball with our rich history to make a statement about themselves, UTEP, UTEP Athletics,  a vision for a much better public image regarding UTEP athletics and so on. I suppose they did. Shouted it in fact . They had a chance to go big. They didn?t. They had a chance to put a head coach in place at an historical ground breaking school that once made a statement, nay, an announcement about right and wrong regarding opportunity based on ability that is more reflective of society and the advancement of it. So, I am disappointed but certainly not surprised. Dr. Natalicio was a woman on a mission and she realized it. Wilson is a caretaker. Be a good soldier or airman airwoman whatever and hold down the fort. Senter has an anchor around his neck already with Dimel.  So, I am disappointed but not surprised.
As for our new basketball coach, I really think that it is hard to tell what we have gotten based on his past because of the different levels but we?ll see what happens pretty quick. Players will be coming and going and that will give us an idea. But only time will tell.
It could have been worse. It could have been us just being a short term retirement home in the good old boy fraternity. At least we have a potential up and comer and not a sure down and goer.
So, I welcome our new coach and wish him great success. Based on the game I saw his team play, and my belief in defense as the starting point of a team?s identity and focus we people who would rather see our team force a turnover or shot clock violation than make a three pointer or slam dunk may be in for a treat.

  • Maybe Hardaway is willing to be an assistant under Golding and learn how to manage a college team while using his name to recruit high caliber guards?

  • Maybe. And let me say that I may be wrong completely about everything. I think that Hardaway is bigger than that. Already. His basketball play was elite level. He was a member of the Dream Team. He was a Haskins player. He is ours. There is redemption. There is social justice. There is so much more that was possible in his name. There are compliance departments and assistant coaches for college aspects.  As a matter of fact that is exactly what they are for. Haskins wasn?t on that shit.  That was his other people?s jobs.
But I always was just wishing out loud. I had almost no thinking that it would happen. And again, I could be wrong in my basic thinking.
If Hardaway has to go through a time as an assistant to get his college level experience my guess would be he could do it for our head coaches money at some cartel school.
I am going to be optimistic about our new coach.  But seriously, do you feel like he is yet to be tested better than the rest of cusa coaches?  Maybe.
I ask myself if Hardaway is better and I say maybe. But I know a butt load more about my fellow fricken UTEP Miner who wore the jersey of my school. I see more. Dreams. Visions. A different future. I am just an old man but we just had a chance to do right by an all time UTEP Miner great and we passed him by for probably a damned fine fellow.
I hope for the best expect nothing and can almost no longer be disappointed. No where to go but up.
