  • My assessment, worth exactly what you paid me for it.

    QB:  Mid-CUSA
RB:  Average Mid-CUSA.  Awatt possibly upper tier.  Hankins possibly higher level than CUSA
WR: upper level CUSA.  Cowing maybe higher.
    OL:  Lower level CUSA
    TE:  Do we have TE's?

DL:  Upper tier CUSA.  Praise could probably play at a higher level than CUSA.
    LB:  Lower-to mid CUSA
    Secondary:  Upper level CUSA

So maybe 2-3 players capable of playing at a higher level than CUSA,  D as a whole mid to upper level, OL as a whole mid-CUSA.  Given where I think our talent level was when Dimel walked in the door, this is a pretty significant improvement.  I think the players he is bringing in are in fact better than what Kug had when he left.

Additional question:  IF we had a talent level averaging upper tier CUSA, or to simplify, if we had clearly the best talent levels in CUSA, would our coaching staff be able to lead us to a top 2-3 finish?

  • I love the assessment & positivity. I also agree with you. Staying tight with LA Tech did surprise me. The fact remains if we can close. The one thing that sticks in my mind is we have an O line that is well below average & this coach is supposed to be a guy who hangs everything on the run.

Agree, although someone (I think UTEPD) said that our best linemen are the young guys.  These are presumably Dimel guys, while the older more experienced guys are Kug.  I think OL typically takes a couple years to mature as players.  Grow into their bodies and strength as well as learn the speed of play.  I don't really know how to eval that, I just hope it's all true.

If the D can continue to keep us in games, we might surprise someone along the way.

I still say if the HC is calling plays, the OC needs to get fired.  The HC simply should not be calling plays, ever.

  • If the HC is calling the plays now is the time to fire the current OC and start searching for a talented one. Go the FBS route if you have to. There are hundreds of them wanting to jump to our level and would jump at the chance to prove themselves. Please do it, I've never been a fan of our current OC.

  • One of our LBJ HS FB players, who always hangs around with my students, has committed to play for UTEP.  Brendan Jones is considered an edge rushing pledge for the Miners.  Our FB team is considered one of the best defenses in Central Texas, with two other DB's going to Oklahoma and Clemson.  The Clemson pledge is currently my student.

  • Great news!

I like having a good defensive unit.  I am one of those weirdos that doesn't mind a low scoring game if it's because of good D and not incompent O.
I realize when I say we are good, I am only talking about at a CUSA level.  But the number of blown tackles and sloppy play are much better than they have been since maybe early Price years?

  • Early Price years.
Damn, those were fantastic. That guy knew how make games exciting & fill seats.

  • Quinton Demps was amazing.

Gotta say though I haven't seen a D lineman in a UTEP uniform this dominating since Tony Tolbert.
