  • Let's suppose we were to drop down to FCS.  Let's further suppose that we are sucky at the FCS level as well.  My question is this:  If we loaded up on El Paso kids, would our attendance actually improve?  Or does the city need a winner to support?

I am mainly basing this notion on the call-in shows that I stopped listening to years ago because of the endless variations of this question from "fans"  -- "Why doesn't the coach play XX?  He's pretty good."  Player XX is invariably a local kid from Bowie that had wheels and put up decent numbers in high school but is also 5-10 and 145 lbs soaking wet.

I've always wondered which is more important to the average El Pasoan -- local kid, or winning?

  • During Kugler's final season(2017), almost exactly 1/3rd of the roster was from El Paso/Las Cruces(34 players to be exact).  That team went winless and the attendance was bad.  In 2016, we had a couple of games where almost every starting offensive skill position player was from El Paso and the attendance was not any different.

El Paso had it's chance to support a roster made up of a large portion of El Pasoans and they didn't.  There are always one or two knuckleheads who will call and say why doesn't UTEP recruit local, etc.   This was tried, but it failed on the field and it also wasn't supported in the stands.

  • Competition is about winning.  There are other factors such as sportsmanship, teamwork and so on that are positive by products, but if they are keeping score the object is to win.  Otherwise it is what we call an exhibition.  Give every contestant a participation trophy and before long it will simply mean you were there.  Give a 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place trophy and the trophies are displayed with pride.  They represent much different things.  Winning represents much more than highest score.  Now, if you can win with nothing but local kids, that would be something really special, while losing with local kids also represents something special, and it ain't good.  There is a reason for recruiting and it is to win.  Anyone can lose.  You don't even have to try.  Losing with local kids means you may not have even tried, but did it with local kids.  So what.  No one wants to see that.  Not even the families of local kids.  If the local kids are trying and losing it is an exercise in humiliation.  One time and we give them credit for trying.  Twice and we say you need to work to get better.  After that it goes down hill quickly and reaches reality and the reality may be hurtful.  Enter your ugly daughter in a beauty contest. The first time she struts the runway she gets credit for trying.  Then keep doing it.  About the 6th or 7th time when people are laughing or booing someone should kick you in the nuts for being an asshole.

  • Then we'd better start buying better players.
