  • If they can do it to get top notch coaching, why can't we?

UTEP tried to get money available to increase coaches pay by adding a $1 fee per class hour a few years back.  The proposition had to be approved in a vote by the students and it lost badly.  It would have raised about $600k but once again the short sighted  students voted it down.

I see this as further proof that the powers that be at UTEP don't give a rat's ass about the athletics.  A dollar an hour means a $15-$18 per semester additional cost to a student that is paying a couple thousand the increase is pocket change, but instead of just doing it, they put it up to a vote of the students.  Well with that attitude why build nice expensive buildings when you could teach those classes much cheaper in plain old vanilla buildings.  But, no, the buildings are seen as worthy of spending bug bucks and the students aren't voting on that.  Thirty-six dollars a year, and DR. Nat thinks that is too much to ask of the poor brown kids going to UTEP.  The poor brown kids of El Paso have shown they don't need anyone's lowered expectations as the adults supply all of the excuses they will ever need.  El Paso's Hispanic kids don't need a team to be proud of.  They just need to go to school for a little less.  Ask students if they want to pay a little extra for some pride and what do you think the vote is going to be?  Dr. Natalicio thinks the pride comes from the sheepskin.  It does.  But everyday after graduation, pride comes from what your school does in the public eye.  And what UTEP does in the public eye on the football field does not instill pride.  She allows it to happen.  I have had lunch with her a few times and I think the world of her and what she has done, but she fails to understand the power of pride and that the football team is THE thing the rest of the country sees when they see UTEP, NOT the beautiful campus or the students she has educated, and those students she has educated are not allowed to experience the same pride other students do.  It would cost an additional $50 a year for that.

  • That is always a problem with commuter schools. In regards to El Paso, It is hard to expect a student to commit to a sport culture they are not used to. However, it is up to the powers that be acclimate any student to a wonderful US sport tradition. We all know that sports is not a part of Natalicio's top 5. It is what it is, so in this case we wait. We wait until she is vacates her position. About a year ago, the UT system has given Natalicio pressure to begin the process in hanging it up. She will be given a lot of leeway (time) to get out, because of her contributions and unique history with her position. A new president will not get sports going right away, but should understand the revenue aspect of sports (especially football).

So... Once again. We must wait. Until then, it is up to the coaches to win and pack those stadiums up. Price was able to do it his 1st 3 years and boosted his pay. We have seen it in El Paso that it is possible to fill up the stadiums. If you win, they will come.

  • They'll cry over $50 bucks more in their tuition but ho, ho, ho, come Saturday at that next concert series downtown or that Ascarate lake party that just started and they won't wink once about the price or the beers they buy. They complain because we don't win but to win you need good coaches not newbies like the one we have now so with them we lose and the cycle continues. It's all a vicious cycle and where it stops nobody knows.

  • Crap.  Those upstarts have already stolen our colors and everything.
Now, looks like they will get their football program moving in the right direction before us, too.  Ours has only been trying for about 70 years or so...  ::)
