  • OK, I'll bite.  Why would there be?  And why would we want there to be?

  • From the Times;

    "1984 uniform switch
    While New Mexico and UTEP didn't play each other during the 1984 WAC Tournament semifinals, the two teams were linked. New Mexico played Brigham Young University in the semifinal game but wore the wrong colored uniform in the first half and had to wear UTEP uniforms until its own visiting uniform arrived for the second half. The Lobos won the game, 64-55, winning over the UTEP fans at least for one night. The next day, UTEP beat the Lobos in the championship game."

  • Wow, Ky you're full of interesting facts aren't you? I wasn't even born until 1985 so I didn't know that.

  • I guess I would have been finishing up my 8th grade basketball season.  We were crazy about the Miners, we all wanted to grow up to play at UTEP.  But I have no memory of this...

    Funny.  When I was a kid, we chose the name for our football team to be the "Future Miners."  Our coach was a military Dad of one of our teammates and they had just moved here to El Paso.  I remember when we decided on the name after practice, that our coach was stunned and almost laughing, he was just like really? Out of all the teams that you could have selected, you guys want to be the Future Miners?  This was during the David Lee era, so our football program was just as low at that time as it is today.

  • I think they got ranked as high as #5 in the country that year.
    If my timescale is right, we were also all excited about two relative newcomers to the NBA -- Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins, and arguing over who was better at dunking.
    And Van Halen had just released 1984 with Jump, Panama, and Hot For Teacher.

    Other than that, Jr. High pretty much sucked.

  • I was 30 something, on my second marriage with 3 kids, working full time at La Feria in Anthony, Texas, and going to school full time at UTEP.

  • I went to Jesus Chapel School on the eastside.  In basketball we played in conference games against other schools and then we played out of conference games against what I think were 2A-4A schools at the time like Anthony, Clint, Canutillo, Socorro, etc.

    I lived in north central near the Fred Wilson/Dyer area, close to Logan Heights.  Had I attended public school I would have gone to Canyon Hills Jr. High and Irvin High.  We were close to the line, my older sisters went to Austin, but they redistricted sometime between them and me.

    On balance it was a good thing.  I don't think Jr. High would have been any less sucky for me anywhere else, it was just an awkward age for me.  High school was fine.

    We had a lot of brains and athletes.  One classmate is a plastic surgeon in EP.  There was a guy a year ahead of me that was an amazing athlete.  He was All American 6 times in college in track and field at Texas Tech.  He won the Southwest Conference in the indoor and outdoor high jump in 1991 and left Tech with the school record in the indoor long jump. He was the most decorated track and field athlete in Texas Tech history at the time.

  • In 1985, I’d just finished my PhD and was working at UAB.  I remember UTEP being ranked #5 at that time, but then we crashed in the NCAA tournament.  I don’t remember the UTEP/Lobo jersey swap.

    Ky - when did you start working at LaFeria?  I used to shop there from time to time when I worked at Anthony HS between 1979 and 1982.

  • My guess would be 1984 and probably through 1985.  Maybe the first half of 86, too.  I was assistant manager at some point during the time.  The owner was Adrian Baca, and the manager was Larry something.

  • 84-85 was my sophomore year at UTEP. We camped out for tickets to the games so that we could be on the first row. We heckled the hell out of the visiting team. I am actually ashamed of the stuff that we said. Players from the visitors often flipped us off and cussed at us. I took that as a badge of honor at the time.
