  • Well, have we just pretty much given up on football?  The excitement of another season of the great sport of football played in the great Sun Bowl?  For my forty years of UTEP football, this is the worst it has ever been.  UTEP fans, with absolutely no reason for it, always came back enthusiastically for another season.  Now, it isn't even acknowledged.  Amazing what has happened.  Mike Price just wasn't winning enough games.  What a fucking scream!  Last season gave us a look at our new coach.  After a few years of just plain stupidity, we saw a new coach come in and show us how he wants to play.  I have said that as far as I am concerned he needs to win no less than four games or his shit will look like a continuation of the program killing wonder, Sean Kugler.  By the way, I'm pretty sure we could get Eric Price as the head coach for pennies, and I would bet 100 bucks today that he could win at least four games this season just playing smarter football.

  • It is unfortunate. I wont be buying season tickets for football this year. I called the ticket office and told them to open up my seats, which are Gold level.

  • I think Aaron might move back down here from Northern Arizona to work with him and you can figure family is family.  Mike might get thrown in as a consultant. lol  I would take it in a heartbeat!  I kind of grew fond of being competitive against other teams there for awhile.

  • I don't think Dimel or Senter should be blamed for anything. Senter found out he inherited a shit storm and has been working his tail off. He is super frustrated and hopes the new Prez will give him a break. Dimel is building a program and we want the speed pass version. No such thing as speed pass when doing it right from the begining in football.

Everyones anger is towards those who recently stepped down as well as the fact this crap was not caught earlier and addressed like normal programs do. I really want this program to be strong and I have an idea to get it there.

Take out a loan to get top coaches and facilities. Build a program to support what was invested. Pay the loan back with the support you will gain a few years down the road with happy supporters. Continue to build from the flow of support. We are not reinventing the wheel here folks. Success takes risk. Don't be afraid of either risk or success.

  • Oh I'm willling to let the Dimel experiment play out.  It either does or doesn't.  If not, he is just the latest in a long line of failure.  Kyyote is right that the last successful coach we had was Price.  But Price was good while Eric was here, and really bad when Aaron was calling plays.  Position coach is his upper limit.

Changing direction slightly, I am still a bit puzzled by Kug's inability to have a competent O-line.  Was it lack of athleticism, poor coaching, or is it just as simple as the fact that the whole defense knew what the damn play was?

  • By the way, let me kind of state where I stand regarding Dimmel.  I started very hopeful that he would just stop doing stupid stuff like forcing defenses to defend five yards on either side of the line of scrimmage.  I kind of felt like that in itself would do wonders for the whole team.  The defense seemed to be playing inspired football.  But the quarterback play and his selection of who was going to play reminded me of Kugler.  Things just didn't make sense.  That was last year.  But, from what I can tell, nothing has changed and that just stuns me to the bone.  Hopefully I am wrong.

BUT!!!!, it is summertime and the board has just about flatlined, so I am going to pose a question for discussion. It is purely hypothetical, so let me say up front that I have no dog in the fight or anything.  I am just curious and it does give us something to talk about.

IF ERIC PRICE WERE TO BE GIVEN THIS TEAM, TODAY, WOULD HE BE ABLE TO WIN MORE GAMES THAN DIMMEL?

I think I picked UTEP to win three games the upcoming season with Dimmel.  I do believe that Eric at the helm could win five games, this season.

    Anyone else have a take?

  • Hell yes.  An Eric Price offense with even a mildly competitive defense wins 5-6 games.  NOT an Aaron price offense which goes long 3 downs in a row.

  • I agree that Eric does better with what he has than any OC we have seen, but I would question the long term value.

    Yes to your question though.

When Eric would mix it up, the defenders had no clue what was coming. When it was working, it was an absolute joy to see. However, the defense would be totally spent come mid 3rd quarter, because the offense didn't allow them to rest. Offensive possessions were among the shortest in the country. If Eric had a better handle on that, then he would have taken a job as a head coach out of UTEP. Burning the candle at both ends on offense will for sure bring crowds, but that is not a long term solution.

  • In sports if you are out-athleted by your opponent, you can either slow it way way down and hope to keep it close and catch a break at the end or you can open your offense up wide and try to score like crazy.

If you are reasonably close to your opponent athletically, both of these extremes are losers over the long run.  You need to have a better balance between taking care of the ball and going big.  I feel like this is why Eric Price was pretty successful with his offense, and Aaron and Kug were unsuccessful.  Aaron and Kug were at polar opposites of that spectrum, 100% of the time.  Eric was more centered and varied and unpredictable.

When playing OU, you need to be at an extreme.  For most of CUSA you need to be more centered.

I suppose the question for 2019 however is just how badly are we outmanned in CUSA at this point?
