  • He knows football.
    He knows football people.
He would have the very best quarterbacks coming to be tutored by him and play for.
Because of above, he would have top receivers and o linemen wanting to block for the best.
The name would be a statement from a bullhorn that UTEP had gotten serious about football.
He, because we know our boy and love what he did here, would put 50+k in the seats- and win.
He would immediately put the program in the black and being in position to move forward.

  • I really don't think this would be a good idea.

There's a lot that goes into running a college football program -- more than just being a name and knowing people. As far as I know, Palmer has zero experience coaching anything other than QBs at QB camps.

Deion Sanders is one of the best known names in football.  He damn near got beat by ND State, and got whipped by Nebraska just like us.

To me the ideal hire is someone that was very successful at lower and mid tier FBS schools, tried the Power 5 and just couldn't make the step up.  The football equivalent of a Billy Gillispie (minus the demons of course).  But not looking to ease into retirement.

  • I think you should look at his experience. It?s much much more than a few quarterback camps. I believe that he and his brother Carson were the sons of a head coach. Not at this level but it isn?t like he isn?t familiar with the scope of the job.

  • Aaron Jones is nearing the end of his career.  Probably will be by the time we replace Walden.  He's a more current name and has home ties.  Getting him is more plausible.  Palmer is happy where he is.

Wonder if Wolfram has any interest in coaching Miner hoops

  • Well, my method is based on this madness. Palmer is an absolute known master with quarterbacks. Quarterbacks are what wins games. Palmer would attract quarterbacks and that attracts receivers.  Passing game is what makes the running game run. Price?s spread offense attracted two McDonalds AA running backs.

  • what the hell, nothing else has worked, I doubt he's interested but never know until we ask

I still think it all comes down to the NIL these days.  Either have the $$ or at least have the promise of moving up to P5 and $$$.  Maybe Palmer provides that pipeline for an underrated QB to put up gaudy numbers and move to P5.

  • I just checked. Walden makes 500k plus 300k media money. I would pay double that for Palmer. He would pack the Sun Bowl. I would tell him there?s a 500k bonus for going to a bowl game and winning it. Double your salary if you win two bowl games in a row. Another 300k if he wins conference title. I want wins. I want movement up the fucking ladder instead of the fucking chutes we have had for too long. I want UTEP to show that it is trying.

Btw, I just found out that the fucking genius that Senter is gave untried and unproven Walden five fucking years!  Not a three year contract to see how it goes. It seems that that doesn?t really matter now does it?

  • That's because he's lazy and doesn't want to go find another coach in 3 years. Just give him 5 years and wash your hands of the whole coaching recruitment thing. That president of ours isn't any better in the sports thingy.

I'll give this guy one year and next year he better produce...or else I'm firing him.  LOL

  • I?ll catch hell for this but here goes.

We have a good coach who recruits well but is struggling to get this team to jell. We have 5 new starters on the o-line and they have had moments of success but more moments of errors that kill drives. Our defense is over worked by the time it?s late in a game but it?s not a bad defense at all. We have 64 new players on the roster so not surprising that jelling is taking a while. The hc antics are just his natural exuberance and while we may not like it, because we?re old as hell, it?s just him. When the wins start coming, and I believe they will, we won?t care about the antics so much.

Skylar will be a good qb down the road but he needs seasoning and Cade should have been the starter this season and I?m glad to hear he will start vs SHSU. Still, the o-line needs to have a full game like the 2nd half of the CSU game.

Most of us picked the Miners to be 1-3 at this point and the loss to SUU is unforgivable. I?ll always be pissed about that loss and we can chalk that up to the coaching staff. Doesn?t mean they can?t redeem themselves. Will they? We will find out as the season plays out.

The Miners should have and could have beat that average FCS team. They also could have and probably should have beat CSU. Two plays made the difference. Blocked UTEP punt led to an easy 7 for the Rams, an o-line error. A UTEP pick 6 called back for an offside penalty. Over anxious D lineman. Just saying this team is more capable that it?s 0-4 record, by far.

The recruiting this staff is doing will increase the talent level and this program will be turned into a winner. It?s just taking longer than we want for sure.

Still some games for the Miners to win this season, setting the stage for a winning season next year.

  • We need a coach that is in charge of discipline. Those players do not have any discipline and it shows with how many penalties we get every game. Walden is the type that swats them on the rump and claps his hands like Jason Garrett of the Cowboys used to do. I like it when the coaches get in their fact and let's them know that it won't be tolerated and if they don't like it either sit on the bench or find another team and see how many are after their services. Maybe we need an ex-Marine drill sergeant to put them in their place.

One thing that irks me to no end is how those players have to over emote when they make a tackle or swat a pass. They start pumping their chests and letting everyone know it was them that did it. Just make the play and shut up. They need to humble themselves and show that they've done it before. Many times they over do the antics and get busted with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, negating a good play. Oooohhh, that makes me so mad I find myself yelling at the tv.

  • Steve K. has addressed this topic on SportsTalk on multiple occasions.  Every time it pops up he has said JP has told him personally that  he is not interested in being a head coach,  especially the head coach at UTEP.
