  • The spring game of orange vs blue was a success yesterday. The EP Times article estimates 3,000 in attendance, lots of energy, lots of recruits in attendance, some fireworks and up tempo on offense. Cade McConnell looked good at QB.

Can?t really tell how good or bad the team will be when it?s UTEP VS UTEP but coach Walden knows how to hype and understands like Price and Bobby Dobbs did that football needs to be fun, entertaining and of course, winning.

He also invited a lot of former Miners to join in to promote ties with alumni. The Jones brothers were there, Demps, Hernandez and some 25 other former football players.

  • Walden brings a lot of energy to the football team. I worry about him when he gets older and his heart can't take the Type A personae. But, I like it and it's too far into the future to worry about that.

The score tells us a lot. It tells us that he believes in scoring and not on who has more time of possession. That was boring football and not a very winning type either. To score 74 points is very gratifying and I'm sure as fans we're gonna like that type of football, I know I will. From the news I saw that MacConnell had some strong throws in there. He certainly does have the arm and I'm sure with experience he'll master his art...anyway I hope. I liked him more than the previous QB which I can't remember his name, (it shows how much credit I gave him).

Now, the waiting part is the one I don't like and it'll be a whole four months to find out how much an improvement the Miners make under this head coach. Fingers crossed...

  • The passing game allows the offense to move the ball long distances in short amounts of time. It has a tendency to be a bit less effective inside the red zone as the smaller the yards remaining the less room for the passing game to work. That?s the good news. The bad news is that the defense spends more time on the field and defense is more tiring to play.
So the whole trick is to be efficient in the red zone, and have a strong defense because it will be spending a lot of time on the field if your offense is doing well. And that my friend is the rub. The thing is, weak defenses almost seem to be linked to wide open offenses. That is why the last two coaches have tried to win the Time of Possession championship every year.
All of this means that the defense is the key. Don?t think about the offense scoring 70. Think about the defense giving up 70.
That scares me. Price had some pretty good defensive players. I have no idea of what we have on hand.

  • Reading an article by Adrian Broaddus on the spring game, almost half of 74 points scored were from the fun games the former players were involved in at halftime. Roughly evenly split between the orange and blue teams. So it looks like the defense did better than we thought.

  • That?s great to hear. I know that everyone is hopeful and excited at the thought of having an exciting offense, as am I.  Losing with a boring offense is what we have had. But losing is losing. Losing but at least throwing punches is better than losing trying to keep from getting hit by not punching. But I want wins. Wins aren?t boring. Even the boring ones aren?t boring. And fun. If we win I promise I?ll not complain about the way we do it.

  • Yeah right, you're an old man Ky, griping is what we do best. It's the only thing we have left and people will expect it of us and if we don't they'll be disappointed.    ;D

Now, be quiet and eat your porridge. Ha, ha..
