  • I suspect that grades or something connected to academics has been a ?priority ? or something like that for quite awhile. In that the coaches have been perhaps disadvantaged because of it. All things being equal, academic standards just slightly higher than your opponents may be all it takes to be the difference. I may be wrong. I just don?t believe in bad luck. I also have watched all around us movement up as we fall farther down. I see feeble attempts to correct. I hear Wilson talk about athletics being the front porch and under her it looks like we live in a shack. But I figure the grades are great. I?m old and tired of being patient. I?m cranky and I want to see a no doubt big time push to get going up and stop the slow death.

I made similar comments about our front porch on twitter on a thread with Wilson's name on it. You may be right about the academic issues but I know that Dimel's teams never had a high APR rating and I doubt that transfers and JC players are majoring in engineering. Just saying.

I remember the David Lee days, very bad football, the Gary Nord days, one good year followed by several very bad years, the Bill Yung years, awful, the Tommy Hudspeth years, and on and on. Bad football is nothing new at UTEP, unfortunately. This is why I'm pleased that a young and ambitious coach who knows if he wins at UTEP then he can write his own ticket to a bigger, richer school. Thats the way I want coaches to leave UTEP, because of success instead of failure.

I'm right there with you on old, cranky and low on patience. The only good thing about the portal era is coaches no longer are allowed 5 year rebuilds. By the 2nd year this coach should have a good team. Time will tell and I'm getting low on time.

  • Bad basketball is a fairly new thing though.  And I do think we tried.  A lot of people wanted this hire and I was one of them.  It didn?t work out but I don?t think it was just a good ol boy hire

  • As I said, I don?t know about grades, I just feel like we can?t always have bad luck. The coaches you mentioned were all bad. Bad luck or something else?  You see, I saw Mac Donald?s all Americans piled up to play for Price. El Paso didn?t scare them. The night life wasn?t too dead for them. So I know that we Utep can get the players. I know what it takes to do it. Name Coach. Were any of the coaches you named big names or leaping unknowns?  Do you figure we were kings of a real WAC for decades because of a name coach or because of his players love of his kind and loving ways?
I believe we hired Golding based on one game. One game. I hoped. Early on I thought perhaps we had gotten lucky. That faded quickly for me. He is Jason Rabadeaux or whatever.
Bargain shopping at the Savers for coaches tells players all they need to know. Winning is not a priority.

The only name coaches I know of were Price for football and Floyd for mbb. Both came because of baggage associated with them. Price worked out very well for a few years and then it went downhill. Floyd worked for an even shorter time. Haskins was far from a name when hired by Texas Western.

Golding had a lot of us on board due to that one win. Terry seemed like a good hire but did not do well except for recruiting. He's doing well at Texas though. We're cursed.

  • Maybe we keep building arenas and stadiums in native American gravesites. They don't like sports I hear, well, except Jim Thorpe.

    Kidding, kidding...

I wonder how a few Tarahumara Indians do in cross country running. We could enroll them in Native American studies, basket weaving, Indo-American language, etc. Man, those Taras can run...and we wouldn't even have to buy them shoes. A bargain if you ask me.
