  • With only 3 returning players (1 starter) it's impossible to know what to expect.   Golding took over a very inconsistent performing squad that won 12 games with BW, and won 20 games without him.

We should be fine at PG.  I like Sibley at SF.  Beyond that I have no clue.  But generically, in year 2 of a basketball head coach at UTEP, here goes:

25+ wins, top 3 in conference, NCAA bid, any of these and we are ready to extend Golding.
20+ wins is a reasonably successful season and probably not too much to gripe about.
16-20 and we have lots of arguments about Golding as a recruiter, his loss of so many players, do we see a light at the end of the tunnel and is it an oncoming train, etc.
12-16 and we're pretty unhappy and beginning to question our direction
Less than 12 and we're already calling for Golding's head.

If I had to bet right now I'd bet on 16-20.  IDK about us at SG, PF, or C from a scoring and rebounding standpoint.  I hope to be surprised, and indeed excited.

  • I think that Abilene Christian and Golding have had more experience than many if not most of the division 1 teams in players transferring out to move up the ladder.  That experience in choosing the best players that can come into new situations and adapt rather than expecting a team to adapt to them and those kinds of things has become more important than ever and Golding showed an ability to take an assembled group not so much of his choosing and putting them into an improved unit.  With his hand picked team I expect him to do even better.  The wildcard is that all teams at all levels are being subjected to tectonic shifting and the resulting dramatic landscape changes taking place at the same time.

  • There is supposed to be a scrimmage vs Tarleton State tomorrow night at UTEP. Someone needs to find a way to get a peek.
