I predict UTEP runs the ball finally. I think the reason for our inability to run may be because of the timing involved in the rpo. Hear me out. The run pass option is based on the decision made by the linebacker whether to move forward to stop the run or hold back to protect from the quarterback running or passing. In the instant after the hike, when the quarterback is making the handoff or not, if the offensive line is holding it own or pushing the run can be sold, but if the line is already getting beat, the run is already dead so any fake or decision has already been removed. That also removes the threat of the quarterback run. Against UNT we were 12 points below our offensive average. Remember that even though Dimel has been forced to pass the damned ball because that's what Hardison is, a passer, he will always prefer to run and eat clock. TOP may not be King, but in Dimel's world it is the Crown Prince to most points wins.
With that being said, there are two sides to the line of scrimmage. Against NT and OU our lines, both sides, offense and defense both were overpowered. Defensively, we have been able to put no pressure on the quarterback to speak of. Tonight, both lines will be able to win. Praise will finally rush the passer and the Miners running backs will be able to find holes to run through instead of walls to run into. Hardison will be able to pass when it is most effective rather than from desperation and have a big night without having to pass 50 times to do it. In the instant right after the snap the Miners lines will be winning.
