  • I'm not counting us out on UTSA just yet. Injuries & momentum are big factors especially when it's the last game of the year. It looks like UTSA has the pieces to last through the season, but if UTEP can keep that defense in tact, it will be very interesting.

  • In another post I said that we need to win the games we are supposed to win, split at least, the games that will be tough, and show we belong on the Big games.  Here is my break down a little further of that.

    UNT  F
    NMSU  W
    Boise St.  S
    OU  S
    UNM  W/F
    Char  W/F
    LA T  W
    FAU  F
    MTU  F
    Rice   W
    FIU  W
    UTSA F      KEY   W=Win S=Show  F=Fight

    Wins

                      Total Offense     Total Defense
    NMSU            90                       127
    LA T               77                       106
    Rice               97                       109
    FIU                94                       128

    Win/Fight
    UNM             130                        44
    Char               65                       120

    Fights

    UNT                41                         68
    FAU                 68                        90
    MTU                96                         59
    UTSA               34                        58

    F/S

    Boise St.         78                          45

    Show

    OU                   18                         76

    ___________________________________

    UTEP               70                         35

Here is some Kyyote special stuff for you.  Average ranking of the teams combined Total Offense and Total Defense for a OffDef score rankings.  For comparison purposes, only.

    UTEP  52.5
    UNT    54
    NMSU  108.5
    BSU   61.5
    OU    47
    UNM    87
    Char   92.5
    LA T    92.5
    FAU    79
    MTU   77.5
    Rice   102.5
    FIU    111
    UTSA    46

Now, there is the competition each team built their rankings against.  OU's 47 was tougher to get than UTEP's 52.5.  Still.  The UNT game is a pick 'em game just about and look at the OffDef scores.  UTEP's 52.5 and UNT's 54.  Boise State could be in for a shock. Oh, and UTSA is definitely within reach.  Now you can say I am crazy but think back to how we did against teams last year and the OffDef numbers are pretty indicative of how games went.  Looking at this, I am somewhat encouraged about our chances up and down the line.  Boise could be an ambush and OU may find themselves wondering wtf happened.  Not say a win, but they may be left shaken.

  • This is last year, not forecast for this year?
So... I guess on paper we should have beat BSU last year instead of them handing us our asses?

The thing about last year was some of the losses were winnable and we gave it away.  Obviously the other team had something to do with it.  But a 8-9 win regular season was attainable.

I think it's attainable this year, but I just can't believe it until I see some improvement in key areas.

  • Last year's stats applied to both UTEP and this year's scheduled teams to predict games this year.  Exact?  Hardly.  When did UTEP play Boise last year?  Did Hardison and UTEP get any better with the rest of the season to play?  Might, the Miners played them differently at the end of the year instead of the beginning of the year. How much did Hardison grow last season?  Did Dimel change things up after the BSU game last year?  All legitimate questions as are yours.

All of the teams changed as did the Miners.  Take the comparisons for whatever they may be worth.  I think the UNT UTEP rankings are pretty spot on to what I saw at the end of the year last year and to begin this one.  I think they may provide a guide to what could be.  I think the BSU team and the Miners teams were very different by the end of the season.  Fresno didn't humiliate us in the bowl game and they were 9-3 in the mwc.  Btw, BSU beat FSU 40-14.   I will let you use your chances formula and compare the two to see if there is any correlation between the two.  I think the rankings pretty much match my expectations.

  • Total offensive and defense yardage rankings and time of possession wont win you many games if you don?t put points on the scoreboard.  Last year UTEPs offense was at the bottom of BCS rankings in points per game and third down conversion.  You won?t win many games if you don?t score!

  • The average points scored per game in a college game is 30.4.  UTEP averaged 25.1 per game,  ranking them 89.  We are ranked 53rd at 25.2 in scoring defense.  We don't score enough but we keep others from scoring enough, too.  Sometimes.  These are averages.  BSU skewed the numbers for sure.  lol  When you try to find out average margin of victory it gets way different to try and figure it out as far as chances of.  The average team scores 30.4 ppg but if we average giving up just 25.2  we don't need 30 points to win.  It is a combination of scoring and defense that is applied to another team and each other team poses their own unique opportunities and challenges.  Perhaps as much as any other factor in winning is an ability to make to proper changes to give your team the most advantageous situations.

  • UNT and UTSA we couldn't stop their run.  Both late in the season. Maybe the D was tired.  My memory (possibly wrong) is that we also struggled to put consistent clock eating drives together which no doubt contributed to tired D.

BSU I had forgotten until I checked just now that we had 3 lost fumbles and 3 INT.  You don't win those games.  Still, their QB was 17/24 for 340 yards and gave up 7.4 yards per play.  You also don't win many where that happens either.  So we sucked on both sides of the ball.  Maybe it will be different this year.

  • Dimel learned from a master at K St on how to manage clock. Didn't work so well in a few games last year. It should be managed better if the QB got better.

I pull it up on my laptop and then connect via HDMI to my TV at home.  Most hotel TV's have the ability to accept a HDMI as well.  Good luck
