  • For what it?s worth, I listened to the Coach Dimmel show on 600 with Teicher last night? Teicher asked him about this subject of ?looking past? FAU, and it didn?t sound to me that either he OR the Miner players (who were interviewed earlier) were looking past them. I think they all sound like they have exactly the right mindset, and as Kyyote said earlier, they sound like they are enjoying winning too much to let their guard down. Hopefully, the effort on the field matches their words, but I do feel good, after hearing them speak about it.
    Go Miners!!! 😎🤙🤙
    Beat FAUx!
    Let's go Brandon!

  • I heard a little of Coach Dimel as well. I also saw video clips of Coach talking to team after win last Sat & he is not allowing them to look past the next opponent.

We haven?t been as good as we need to be in the red zone on finishing drives,? said Dimel. ?In a game like this when you?re on the road and you need to maximize every opportunity, we?re not going to be able to settle for field goals.?

So far this season, UTEP has made 26 trips to the red zone, but have only scored 13 touchdowns (50%) in those trips. The Miners have come up empty-handed in four trips to the red zone.

?We aren?t going to be able to settle for not scoring in the red zone,? said Dimel. ?We really have to finish drives and put a lot of emphasis on getting the ball in the end zone when we get down there, but it?ll be more critical for this game.?

IMO, there's two reasons for our difficulties.  Number one is we get conservative and run between the tackles a lot.  But the reason for that is because of number two -- Hardison struggles with the short passing game.  Lots of picks, lots of incomplete passes.  So what do you do?

  • I just got done watching every play of the UAB FAU game.  This is the blueprint of how we beat FAU.

UAB defensive line dominated and was in the backfield continually.  FAU QB when under pressure forces plays.  He's a good QB and made lots of plays that way but also threw a bunch of INTs and incomplete passes.  FAU offense never could get established.

UAB offensively was pretty methodical with the occasional big play thrown in there.  Most of their big run plays were not between the tackles.  I don't think we can score as many points as UAB did, but we only need to score more than we allow FAU to score.

  • Interesting little data point from a writeup I read.

    Quote
Awatt is particularly strong after contact, averaging 4.08 yards after contact per attempt.

This is the data that supports what we have instinctively felt that Awatt was the better runner.  He averages 5.5 yards per carry, and 4.08 yards after first contact.  So he's basically getting hit just past the line of scrimmage (on average), and turning into a meaningful gain.  By contrast, Hankins seems to just drop.  It appears to me that Awatt does some spins and other moves to enable him to drive and fall forward while Hankins just tries to run over them, mostly unsuccessfully.

I share the same opinion of Hankins. I've seen that he tries to run over people like a fullback instead of using evasive moves. He needs to watch Aaron Jones more often. It pains me to see a highly recruited player from El Paso not playing to his potential. The running backs coach needs to work with him more. I'm not impressed at all with him. I like Awatt more and that freshman (?) whose name starts with an "I" I believe...help me here. He was doing pretty well in the earlier games.

Although Jones took on a defender and drove him back into the end zone last game..
Are you thinking of Willie Eldridge?   Flores is interesting in that spot too.  He's kind of a slippery playmaker.

  • Eldridge, that's the one, thanks Sisy. I was impressed with his running. I'm also becoming a fan of Flores he's coming into his own. Is Flores a fullback?

We need a good tight end to ease the pressure on the QB when he's in trouble.

    Man, I can't wait until 4 pm.

  • Miner offense is bad. QB may have an arm, but he should have had 3 picks instead of the 1. Receivers not catching well either. A shame the defense is so good, only to be toppled down by a bad offense.
When they are in a Bowl game, it will not be pretty.
