  • When you have that kind of leadership in place,? Terry said, ?the sky?s the limit about how far you?re going to be able to go as an athletic program.?

Wondering what kind of leadership we have because it looks like the limit is one win and being the worst team in college football. I think his statement tells us some of the truth.

  • We have 30+ years of a president that doesn't give a rats ass about football, followed by a president that is just putting in time until full retirement.  We had an AD that started off well and then just mailed it in the last several years, and a current AD that was hired for fundraising -- not understanding that UTEP does not have the same emotional attachment from alumni (or average salary) as The Citadel and fundraising would follow athletic success.  We went "safe" with the Dimel hire in the hopes of no scandals rather than wins.  And we got a minor scandal and one win.

We desperately need a president and AD with vision.  Natalicio had a vision, it just didn't involve football.  I think the only person remotely associated with either of the major men's sports with vision seems to be Golding.  I really hope he does.

  • I wouldn't put too much into breaking down what Terry said. His goal was to come back to TX & eventually get the TX HC position. We all know he failed at that & is settling for 2nd best. Like Golding, he is excited about a new opportunity.
I actually don't see him all that bad. He came here & really tried to win using his program. We all learned he was not advanced in coaching skills, but was a hell of a recruiter. He also couldn't connect with the kids or even El Paso (much like Barbee). Him leaving was a blessing in disguise for he & UTEP. Because I am an even bigger fan of Coach Beard, I wish Terry well.
I agree with KY that Natalicio didn't give the effort needed for a successful football team, to an extent. The facilities for football are pretty incredible. Natalicio was a big part of that. What's not incredible is coaching & recruiting. That must be addressed yesterday. Now, Dimel came on board & sold a long term program to fix the dumpster fire Kuglar created. It is what was needed, but we thought there should have been more advancements by now.
I have a theory. I think the program was that bad & it's taking a while to fix. I think a better coach would have had better results, but I blame UTEP for allowing the program to dip like it did. That is why I have temporarily boycotted football. I am not going to invest in a broken system. That would mean you are blindly throwing money into a money pit or encouraging the bad decisions being made.
