Computer question, I need help...

  • who do you guys go to when you're having computer problems? My computer is very slow, even slower than Ky (and don't say it matches my intelligence Ky). It used to be just Youtube videos stopping at mid point and now even other sites are the same. It is frustrating to the max. I told my wife I was ready to hurl a brick into the screen and she asked who could you go to to get it fixed? The only ones that I know of is the GeekSquad but I don't know if they're expensive or are any good. Have you guys have a good to computer person outside of the Geeks?

    HELP!

  • Don't waste your money on GeekSquad.  They are awful.  I found a guy in my town with good reviews and he did OK but that didn't help much.

There's some good websites like bleepingcomputer.

If you have Macafee, remove it.  It's worse than a virus.  And Windows has pretty decent built in antivirus now.  Every computer I have ever had that had Macafee gradually slowed down until it became unusable.  Removing Macafee helped a lot.

If you know how to look at which processes are running, see if one of them is taking up all your memory or CPU.  Then google whether it's a necessary proecess, malware, or what.

That's all I've got.  I have completely given up on several old computers over the years and just went out and bought new ones.  By the time you pay someone $100 to "fix" it, you could pay a little more and get something brand new.

  • Sis has you on the right track. What operating system does your computer use?  Vista, 8 9 10?  The thing is, you can go into it and find what is using the running and how much it is using. Also, your first step probably should be to defragment it. It is kind of like having a secretary come in and put all the shit in the right place so it makes your desk more efficient.

  • I had a data analysis and data processing business for 25 years before I retired and started a new vocation of teaching HS math.  Don't waste your money on getting it fixed.  BUY a new computer.  It's time to replace that IBM XT model you've been hanging onto for decades now.  New computers can be pretty inexpensive.  You'll be a lot happier with the speed of newer models.  Costco and Sam's Club have some name brand models.  Don't buy some off brand model because it's cheaper.  That'll just create new problems.

Moving your files from old to new can be done with some software.  I would recommend adding dropbox to both old and new computers using the same login.  If you add your files to dropbox on one, it will add them to the other computer.

I just bought a new laptop last fall.  I bought the suite of Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.  because I need those features.  I'm sure there's a cheaper package available that someone here can recommend.

Out with the old!  In with the new!

  • I've had good luck with older computers by wiping the machine clean and replacing the operating system with a Linux system like Ubuntu. It's easy to do. Just make sure you save anything important before you start.

  • The closest one that can speak computerize is my SIL. I'll show her youse guys posts and see which one would be easier to do. I can work on an airplane but never flew on the ones that I worked on, but that's beside the point, LOL, but don't know a thing about computers. As far as those suggestions you guys gave me I was like a deer looking at headlights or Biden with his usual look, Doh! I guess because I don't know the nomenclatures of various things on computers and that's one reason I'm lost. Good thing my wife sewed my address on my shirts in case I got lost or else I'd be really in trouble.

  • LOL.

I would definitely go with the "pitch it and buy a new one" option then.

  • You know it got really bad so I did what I usually do when my satellite provider on my tv is not working well. I will reset it by clicking the reset button but since this 'puter doesn't have a reset button that I'm aware of I turned it off at electrical outlet and By Yimminy it worked wonders. It is almost normal now and since I have tons of patience (my wife would refute that) I can live with how it's working now. I do have patience, aren't I a Miners fan?
