Any improvements that are going to be made to the fan perceptions, the gametime experience, the coaching staff, and actual results for any sport is going to start with the AD. We need someone with vision and the energy and charisma to sell that vision to the donors.
Further, I think it needs to be someone who knows football well enough to say "This is how we are going to play football at UTEP." I think we know that coaches are going to come and go with some regularity whether or not we are successful. We've absolutely got to be able to have some kind of continuity when we switch. Burning the house to the ground every 5 years is not good.
In basketball, Floyd is very slowly building something (I tell myself). Assuming we show some fruits of that this year, then we start thinking about how to maintain some of that continuity. If not, we start over. There too, we need to build a vision of who we are and sell it.
Branding is hugely important and in and of itself can provide results. There is no UTEP brand. That doesn't mean we can't create one. We can. We just need someone with the vision to do it.
IMO that brand needs to be that UTEP sporting events are going to be the most fun you can have for your buck for miles around. You can create a fun environment without spending lots of money. Ask minor league baseball about that.
If the fans are having fun, the players will be having fun. That doesn't mean undisciplined. It just means they can feed off the energy. Visiting recruits will definitely feel the energy and it will make a difference.
But damnit, just have a freaking vision! Manage the decline is not a vision, but I think that's Boob's strategy.
