  • Just WOW. The Miners blew them out of the water. I realize they didn't have everyone healthy, but that is part of the game. We had our asses handed to us in rebounds, but beat them everywhere else. I was disappointed not seeing Tarke or Stroud play. I did love to see Hawkins & Verhoeven play some much improved minutes.
I'll have a break down of what I thought of each player, coaching, & over all team effort later this week.

  • Hell. I couldn't wait.
Boum- the kid was all over the place, but couldn't buy a bucket. The kid needs to relax on offense & it will come.
Lathon- the kid did it all. I wish he would have hit more shots, but he's great. Even his ball skills are much smarter.
Hawkins- much improved D & drives to the hoop. He still needs more work on D & needs to work on jumper.
Edwards- best defender on the team & I love how he drives. Negatives is he needed to shoot more & pass better.
Williams- lock down defender & finds ways to score. Is really dominant in the paint. Needs to get fouls under control.
Odigie- was a defensive presence and started to get comfy on offense. Needs to get better with shooting & reb quicker.
Verhoeven- had a few mistakes on D, but played much smarter as time went on. He needs more minutes to hang with smarter players. He is very athletic.
Vila- the kid does it all. He is a 6'11" wing player that rebounds. Great footwork. Needs to work on shooting more.
Stroud & Tarke didn't play. I'm thinking they sat because of bad match up & defense. I expect to see them on Fri night.
Terry- outcoached a really good coach. Needs to work on the press & rotate more kids in. He also needs to put the Miners in better rebounding drills.

Miners- got out rebounded, but perseverance, free throws, defense, & our bigs took us over the top.
We beat a very good team.

  • Agree almost 100% with Chanson.  We won handily against a good team even though we were not really in sync offensively.  By the end of the game we were meshing much better, a very good sign.  NMSU however was also not right and was hurting from the absence of their guards.  The next matchup will be epic.

Here's some things I think each player needs to work on, because I think individually those things add up to almost all of our offensive challenges.

Boum -- Picks up the ball at inopportune times when there is nowhere to pass it.  I don't understand why as he is probably the best ballhandler on the team.  It completely stalls out the offensive tempo.  Like Chanson said, needs to relax and let the game come to him. Could have had a huge night if he did.

Lathon -- Very solid point, would be nice if we was more creative offensively, but hard to criticize much.

Hawkins -- Still raw.  Will see spot minutes, but you can see flashes of the player he will become.  Mainly needs play time.

Edwards -- Gets lazy on passing.  Take care of the damn ball and he would be a very complete player.

Williams -- not much to criticize.

Odigie -- Tried to force some things early.  He too needs to let it come in the flow of things.  Young player who was THE MAN last year and needed to force things no longer does.  You have a team now, trust them.

Verhoeven -- Like Hawkins, very raw but you can see the talent waiting to mature.  Will also see limited time this year.

Vila -- I really like this kid.  I really believe part of the offensive struggles of the team as a whole is due to him adapting from Euro game to US game.  Our players aren't going where he instinctively thinks they will and vice versa.  I will probably make a separate post later today on this because I think it's interesting (and critical for us).  His ability to adapt his game may honestly be the glue that makes the difference between a good team and a great one this year.

Terry -- Not much to criticize here.  His coaching skills are evident in the Xs and Os as well as the development you can see in players.  I would have liked to see Stroud and Tarke, but he obviously has a plan.  Will Stroud redshirt?

If we continue to work out the kinks this could be a very special team.  We haven't had this level of talent and depth in years.  Barbee, Sadler, and Gillispie might have arguably had teams with more talent on the starting five, but I honestly don't know if our bench has been this deep since the mid-80s.  And Kaden Archie hasn't played a minute yet.  If Terry sticks around and can continue to recruit at this level we could be a perennial powerhouse.

  • Much better job than I did, Sisy. I was excited last night & disnt go into depth.
I know NMSU did have all players, but we not only beat them handily, but our guards were off as well. Edwards, Boum, & Lathon couldnt really connect from the 3 like we saw against Yech, GCU, etc. That's why we were below that 70 mark. We are basically going to see the same kids come the game in Cruces & they will still be out the PG. Jans is a very good coach & they will adapt. I actually dont expect him to last long. What ever the outcome, we will be very competitive.
Some great tests will come during the Diamond Head Classic. Even with mistakes, this team is still an A.
I honestly cant remember when the last time we had a team that knew how to close.

  • Great analysis guys.  I saw the talent against Tech but had my reservations till I saw how we did against these guys.  They didnt have everyone, we were sloppy offensively either from jitters or still learning to pksy with one another. Agree whole heartedly that Vila could be the piece that propels this team to greater things.  Hes capable of hitting the 3, mostly makes good passes, has a soft touch around the rim and can hit freethrows. Now I can release those emotions and get excited.

So close and yet so far.  Ill be in Hawaii during their classic but Ill be on the Big Island instead of Oahu. Were making a short trip to Maui.  Now wouldve loved to be there for the game.

Finally it was bittersweet that my dad wasnt with me.  He made about three quarters of the games last year.  He would have been so excited to see this team.

My dad passed away several years ago.  He was always a huge Miners basketball fan, and he would have been very excited about this year as well.  I always miss him the most this time of year.

  • It's good to hear from you again, Dawg.

One thing that I see in this team that I didn't see AT ALL is that this team can make free throws. Enemas U. switched place with us in that regard. In years past all we heard during free throws was a loud CLANG from the ball hitting the rim and bouncing out. This year, WOW, they're shooting them really good. That's the difference that will propel us to many wins where that was the chain around our neck bringing us down to the nether depths. (eh, pretty poetic, huh?)

One question: How many of these players we have are from Floyds team and from last years team?...and who are they?

  • I was a so-so BB player in my younger days but I do know talent and after watching high lights of the game against HBU and Enemas U. this team is very good. They play with determination and instead of the "oh oh, here we go again, losing mentality that other teams had this team doesn't get riled. The talent reminds me of the good ol days and of the many good teams I watch from the Cabal schools on TV. These team WILL WIN Cusa, bank on it...and an added extra will be ranked in the Top 25. Take that to Vegas.

I'm stoked as I haven't been for a very looooonnnnngggg while. I can't wait for the NM game to really see how good we are.
