Keeler of SHSU is a candidate for UTEP FB coach

The scholarship issue will be interesting. One RB, Dove, has already announced he will be transferring. A school is not allowed to recruit more than 25 players per year and place them on athletic scholarship and can't have more than 85 on scholarship. So if UTEP has 85 now, 84 with Dove gone, and UTEP lists 21 seniors on their roster, so down to 63. That would give UTEP just 22 scholarships for the upcoming recruiting class unless more players decide to transfer. If 10 more transferred out and UTEP was down to 53 scholarship players they still could not recruit more than 25 so they would be short of the 85 limit.

I don't know who.  But, I have interviewed for jobs I knew I had and have been part of interview committees that were going through the process.  I don't know if we will ever know if I am right.  We'll see.

Keeler is past his prime & almost 60. He's not the future of Miner football. Unfortunately UTEP has this guy as a top 3 candidate.
We need to go young.

I’m not sure he’s past his prime.  The players will run through a wall for him.  Keeler also knows what type of wining football people like to see.

He does recruit well, but that needs to be placed in the context of FCS.  By that, I mean, he can get good HS kids, but he can also get top-flight Houston-area kids who went to FBS schools and (for whatever reason) want to leave.  Since SHSU is The FCS, the kids don’t have to sit out a year when they transfer.  That won’t happen if he’s coaching at UTEP.

Augie Touris is another UTEP player who has announcd that he will transfer, so that opens up another scholarship fir the next coach.

If the “fix is in” and the job has already been decided as Kyyote believes, then my personal hope is that Houston is the man and we are just waiting for JMU’s season to end before we make him official.  Houston also withdrew his name from the Georgia Southern job around the same time that Senter got the UTEP job.  So that would be my choice, if we have already internally selected our coach.

UTEP beat Mississippi (a sort of cartel school) in the 1967 Sun Bowl.  Maybe the Miners beat someone after that (BYU comes to mind and Arizona State in the 70’s) but I can’t think of any in the current iteration of college football’s landscape.

I agree that Houston would be the best man for the job, but I have a source that says he will not be coming to UTEP. The guy wants too much money and UTEP will not fork out that much at this time. He is a super hot coach right now and other schools are offering more. I have a feeling he will be headed to a Cartel Conference.

My personal take is that UTEP needs to run a system to compete with other school because recruiting here is horrendously difficult.  I would like someone from the Leach family tree or a triple option program like Navy/Ga Tech.

Shouldn't we be asking Senter?

It seems like in the case of a departing coach the scholarship limit should be adjusted.  It is to be expected that a lot would change, and it doesn't seem like the scholarship rules are intended for that situation.

You mean Senter not Stull, right? Personally I'm hoping for Keeler or Houston but Morris of TT, Yurcich of Okla St would be very good too. I'm not expecting an OC since they could have been hired already. Must be waiting for one of the FCS HC to finish their season. Could be a long wait which means recruiting will be more behind the 8 ball than usual.
