I know that my less than optimistic attitude is a downer. I guess I have never been one to look at a train coming at me and thinking Oh well. I'm going to complain about it and see if there isn't something that can be done. I believe the ncaa is killing amateur athletics ironically. The lack of loyalty to the school leads to a lack of loyalty in the form of fan attendance. That can't be a shock to anyone in power and making decisions. At some point, it ends up distilling itself down to wins and losses being the only thing that attracts or doesn't, fans and revenue.
I started to try and get some facts and numbers and the first thing I found was that attendance has been dropping for years, now. It isn't just covid, or media availability at the stadium. But what was amazing was that I found a list of 5 year averages for each of the 131 schools and it started with the ones with the worst attendance. I thought instantly that I was looking at the Power Index or something. The teams were almost the exact same teams and in almost the exact same order.
130 Ball State
129 Northern Illinois
128 UMass
127 Coastal Carolina
126 Kent State
125 Charlotte
124 ULM
123 Eastern Michigan
122 Central Michigan
121 San Jose State
120 Georgia State
119 UAB
118 FIU
117 New Mexico State
99 UTEP
2019 Ranking (2018 season): 89
2018 Ranking (2017 season): 825-Year Average: 19401.80
Filled Stadium Capacity 37.31%
Here is the espn Power Index rankings and they are exactly the same but they aren't far off;
121 UConn Huskies
New Mexico State Aggies
Bowling Green Falcons
Nevada Wolf Pack
Colorado State Rams
Colorado Buffaloes
Akron Zips
Charlotte 49ers
New Mexico Lobos
Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors
UMass Minutemen
131 Florida International Panthers
I think the UTEP attendance shows the dramatic drop we have seen, dropping 7 places in one year. Now, on the list of teams attendance rankings for the past five years from worst to best attendance. the first time a big 5 team shows up is at number 80, fifty lower tier teams into the list. They are a notoriously bad football team. They are followed by another, Duke. And Wake Forrest. Back to mid-majors and now there starts to be more and more of the worst college teams in the cartels, like Vanderbilt, WA St., and Ore St..
That mid-major teams don't have the attendance that cartel teams do is not the point. The point is that they are losing attendance. All of the teams, practically. I will post the link and they almost all are just shedding fans-even most of the cartel teams. The 15 teams, two or three from the big 5 who always win will always attract the bandwagoneers of bandwagoneers and have their attendance. So, college football is slowly drying up like Lake Mead. The NCAA knows it, and knows why.
Doesn't look like that is going to change. Without a word from the people hit first and worst, I would have to say they are cool with it. So, it is kind of down to hoping the Miners win-so they can leave. Yeah.
Now, that's doom and gloom. Basketball will be the first to go because the lack of loyalty will be the most evident there. Football should take a little longer, as the entire team won't be leaving and be replaced by all new players. The basketball team? Well, it is going to take a little time getting used to saying, "I like that new kid. I hope he leaves, soon!" Kind of weird.
Go Miners!
