  • Price is right in El Paso (again)

The item on the transaction list Sunday came as little surprise: Sean Kugler was out as Texas-El Paso’s coach after an 0-5 start and an 18-36 record over five seasons.

With a new athletic director coming soon and an ugly September that saw the Miners ranked in the bottom 10 nationally in a shocking number of categories — total offense and defense, scoring offense and defense, rushing offense and defense, passing offense, pass efficiency and pass efficiency defense among them — a change was coming.

The unexpected tweak came a day later: UTEP brought back Mike Price, 71, as the team’s interim coach for its final seven games, nearly five years after he retired.

It’s a no-lose scenario for the school. It knows who will be the program’s caretaker for two months, and it is clear it now has the chance to make a hire relatively quickly without an awkward conversation with an interim coach. It might not be the best strategy for a school trying to salvage a season, but it’s not a bad course of action for a team facing a considerable rebuild.

  • Damned local sports media got on their high horse again and blasted Stull and Natalico for messing things up. A few years of Kugler not embracing the changed college football landscape is his own fault. Fans saw him going Barnie Fife year after year and the local sports media stayed quiet and only questioning softly because they love that free food before the home games up in the pressbox and at the monday presser indulging their diabetic fat asses and walk around on the sideline acting like their Matthew McConaughey at a UT home game. So what happens, the national media goes directly to them thinking they are a good and accurate source and the actual on the ground facts do not get put out because they go and tell the national outlet "Natalicio and Stull messed this one up". Morons.

  • I blame the whole thing on Stull. Natalicio doesn't know jack shit about football and she depends on Stull on what is best. Stull had some great hires, but really jacked it up with Kuglar. He went with his heart and not with qualifications. That is why Stull decided to leave a hot seat. How is Kuglar going to say "NO" to the opportunity to coach his school? The man had great ideas, but the execution part is the most important. Stull put Natalicio and Kuglar in bad situations. That is why Kuglar left Stull suddenly. He was set up for failure and didn't know it until it was too late.
I give a small bit of credit to Stull for getting Price back in. Price is good on the fly and can turn a program around on a dime. Price's issue is he can't sustain for too long, which is why he is perfect for this temporary task. The guy would be a Hell of an Athletic Director, though. IMO (5yr term max). Dude can raise money and convince super talented coaches to give UTEP a try.
Anyway, 2step has a point in which most of the local media has been corralled and fed like fat pigs. I worked for KVIA in the past and no way will local media bite the hand that feeds them. Anyone that spends money with the local TV & Radio will never see bad press. Only the obvious is reported. An example is a certain familiar face at Mission Chevy got a DUI and only 1 latin based TV station reported it, because they gave no $$ for ads. The next morning after the report aired, a rep from Mission all of a sudden shows up with a check for ads and the story was quickly dropped.
That is small town local media for you. The integrity of journalism is easily compromised here. It is what it is.
I know I'm dreaming, but if the Miners win on Saturday, big sports media will pick up on it. It will more than likely not happen, but Price will be marked as a hero. What ever his price is, it is right.

    Go Miners

  • Washington Compost? Fake news!

Seriously, the more I mull over this temporary appointment I can live with it. It's not like things were going to change with Kugs anyway. We're slated to lose every game on our schedule so what difference does it make if we have an ex-coach that didn't really have stellar results in his latter years. We know about our own "Bambino's curse", i.e., November losses. So what the heck, maybe he'll heave that football all over the stadium. I for sure was fed up with trying to run into brick walls and calling it a positive.

Let's go Mike, show them why you won national coach of the year.
