  • We should know a whole lot when they pick someone to put in charge to take over the immediate duties of head coach.  Natkin is the name to keep in mind.  Another is Robert Rodriguez.  Both are UTEP guys, local heroes, and could be had for a song.  My guess is Natkin will be elevated and maybe they will call it a co-head coach position, but that is a no lose situation for Stull.

  • Reading about his resignation surprised me.  I honestly thought he'd finish the season.

I appreciate that he tried to do things his way. They didn't seem to work.

  • From an ESPN writer:

Some early candidates for the UTEP coaching vacancy: Texas Tech offensive coordinator Eric Morris, Texas A&M-Commerce coach Colby Carthel, Tennessee QB coach Mike Canales, Utah wide receivers coach Guy Holliday, North Texas offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, Sam Houston State coach K.C. Keeler, Minnesota Vikings assistant Robert Rodriguez, BYU special teams coordinator Ed Lamb, San Diego State defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales.

  • He is and always will be a Miner, so I wish him the very  best.  I hated the way he started and thought that he could have done all of the right things without having to besmirch the previous coaches and players as he did.  But, his failure to pass the fricken ball down field was just inexplicable.  For whatever reason/excuse.  I honestly felt like he was in over his head and would have had considerably more empathy for him had he not set the tone for empathy for coaches, himself at the start.  Won't it be interesting watching this one play out.  The coaching fraternity is very tightly knit and they are all connected.  There are AD's that come from inside the fraternity and there are those who come from outside.  It is no surprise that those AD's that come from the coaching fraternity look to their immediate coaching family first, quite often.  Business people approach it very differently.  Stull had already planned to give the new AD the problem of dealing with Kugler, or there was already an agreement in place between the two regarding Kugler and Stull.  So, I don't see Stull jumping in to hire anyone.  My guess is he will leave that open for the new AD.  By the way, I strongly believe that the new AD is probably already chosen and the powers that be are going through  the necessary motions.

  • Stull wouldn't saddle the next AD with a mid-year permanent hire.  the interim will be from within the program.
That said, I'm sure they are reaching out to the likely candidates.
I am also quite sure that they have either identified the next AD or have a very short list.
But of course they legally have to open it up and pretend they haven't already made up their minds.  Its one of the games that has to be played.

I would prefer a more open offense, just with a little imagination.  As I've said a million times, Eric Price had imagination, Aaron Price had none.  Aaron was the "Through the Looking Glass" version of Kug.  I would be fine with someone of the Eric Price mold.  Cannot totally disregard the D like CMP did however.  You have to be able to disrupt the backfield

We have to recruit better.  When 4 or 5 of your top players are from EP you are not recruiting well.  It's great to get some of your hometown players, but you can do better for the "athlete" positions.  QB, RB, WR need great athletes and there are plenty of them out there.  AJ was a one-time deal.  Imagine if CTF only recruited EP.

If this basketball season lives up to hopes and expectations there may not be a vacancy there to fill. CTF may finally turn the corner and not have to rebuild every year and we may feel lucky to have him.  I hope.

  • So, there are a few of us that know that Kuglar had split up with his wife and even has a girlfriend now. Yes, he has problems at home and I hope he recovers from his personal and professional issues.
In regards to the AD position. The process has already started and interviews are supposed to get under way in the middle of October. I also heard that a few calls had been made to set up for the HC position a few weeks ago.
I am pretty sure that KY is correct in that there is a favorite for the HC position unless an unknown steps up.
The construction for the press box should get under way after the season and our football program will need to step up with wining to usher it in when it is done. A losing program and a beautiful stadium will raise eyebrows with the board of regents and Natalicio will not be caught with her pants down like that.

  • I was aware of what you speak of in the first paragraph and thank you for the Natty with her pants down image.  Certainly the stuff of nightmares...

Oops. I should have phrased that different.

1st and foremost that Athletic Director position needs to be filled yesterday. Not having a determined leader in this position in the middle of a nightmare football season and with basketball just weeks away is not ideal. Stull holding until we get someone is not going to cut it. The guy doesn't want to be here anymore and that doesn't help us. The guy is not putting out fires. He is only not letting them get out of hand.
I really hope they bring on a young kid with energy, because the 1st year is going to be the busiest of his/her life.
2nd, the football HC position needs to be filled before the season ends. There are lots of candidates and not too many HC positions available. YET. After the season is over a lot of better jobs will come available. UTEP is in a unique position in needing to fill it with little opposition. While the position doesn't pay the bigger $$, the perks add up. I'm talking a house, vehicles, a percentage of the $ for high ticket sales, and more. Other Miner sites are stuck on just base pay and crying for more. Luckily this site attracts a higher level of understanding and sophistication when it comes to the long and short term goals for this great school.
3rd, our men's basketball program needs to be pushed hard. We finally have a very good team and it would be a great beacon to get the moral of the Miner loyal back up.

  • I think that Eric Price is perhaps the most qualified, and knowledgeable about the unique recruiting situation UTEP presents.  But, having said that, Robert Rodriguez could sell El Paso like no one I know.  Wild cards I'm throwing out there.  I also think Natkin may have the inside track.  He is the one coach of the Miners who remains untarnished, and the ties that bind are strong.  Plus, he is as good as it gets, character wise.

  • Eric was OC.  He is the older, a bit more reserved than Mike, a lot less pugnacious than Aaron.

  • Right.  Upon re-reading I was very unclear.  I knew Eric had been OC and very successful.  What I meant to say was yes to Eric, no to Rodriguez or Natkin or anyone else hasn't been a successful coordinator.

    Requirement:
Successful OC or DC at D1 level
Succcessful HC at any collegiate level (without baggage)

Eric Price was OC at both Memphis and Tulane after UTEP and his offenses were lousy. Please no.

Robert Rodriguez is a position coach. You want to go down that road again?

Brian Natkin said today that we need to be physical and run the ball. Where have you heard that before?

Someone new, please. The OC at USF or Oklahoma St or Texas Tech, you know, people who have heard of that spread offense or power spread we all want to see. Maybe the head guy at Angelo St that runs one of the most successful Div ll teams in the country with a wide open offense.
