  • Life, and UTEP basketball are like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you are going to get.
    I am starting to think that I may just go with UTEP wins from here on out as that may have a much a chance of being right as if I try and pick winners and losers.

    A couple of quotes regarding transfer portal;

    "...Greg Kampe has a message for basketball coaches everywhere: Change the way you recruit or see your career go up in flames.

    ?If you are building for the future,? the longtime Oakland men?s coach says, ?you?re going to lose your job.?

    It?s been that way in basketball for years. In fact, this year?s men?s national champion, Baylor, started two and sometimes three transfers, getting 54% of its points from those players this season. In football, Spilbeler says he?s heard from some Group of Five programs planning to fill half of their rosters with transfers.

    ?The coaches that embrace all these changes are the ones that will adapt,? says Washington State athletic director Pat Chun. ?The ones that can?t adapt to the sea of change are the ones that are going to struggle.?

    ?I?ve always been about developing players, but it?s not developing players anymore,? says Todd Berry, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. ?It?s about assimilating a team for next year that can win.?

    ?Once you fill your roster with one-time transfers, they can?t go anywhere [and play immediately again],? Grass says.

    At least, it?s unlikely they would. Those who have transferred once already will have to sit out a year if they choose to transfer again. Though they can seek a waiver, that process is expected to feature a ?high bar,? says Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby. ?We aren?t prepared to live with an open market where you can pack up and leave when you want.?

    Some aren?t buying it. Berry says coaches are assuming that the one-time transfer exception will evolve into unlimited transfer, a theory that could further impact the annual football initial counter limit. Teams cannot add more than 25 new players in a year. For now, the NCAA is not adjusting the limit, though that topic is likely to be examined in the coming months. Some conferences have even proposed legislation that would allow schools to gain an additional new player for every transfer.

    I still think it helps to have a degree in ncaa rules law to figure it all out, BUT I think we all are figuring this out on the fly.

    Looking at our basketball roster;

    ALFRED HOLLINS   SENIOR  OREGON STATE
    GILLES DEKONINCK REDSHIRT JUNIOR FRESNO STATE
    EMMANUEL WHITE REDSHIRT JUNIOR COASTAL BEND COLLEGE
    TYDUS VERHOEVEN REDSHIRT JUNIOR  DUQUESNE
    SOULEY BOUM REDSHIRT JUNIOR  SAN FRANCISCO
    JAMAL BIENIEMY JUNIOR OKLAHOMA
    CHRISTIAN AGNEW JUNIOR NORTH ALABAMA
    KEONTE KENNEDY REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE XAVIER
    JORELL SATERFIELD SOPHOMORE  RANGER COLLEGE
    BONKE MARING SOPHOMORE BLINN COLLEGE
    ZE'RIK ONYEMA FRESHMAN  JOHN JAY HS
    KEVIN KALU FRESHMAN  OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL SCHOOL
    CAM CLARDY FRESHMAN BRIDGELAND HS
    JAMARI SIBLEY FRESHMAN  GEORGETOWN
    KEZZA GIFFA FRESHMAN LEVALLOIS METROPOLITANS 92

    That gives you a pretty good idea of just how much we are already deep into this at UTEP.  It seems to me that we are going to be a great place to funnel front line players if I have this right.  Ezeagu(sp) at K St, Williams at Tech and I see that we could easily have others plucked away.

    Btw, I haven't checked on other players but Hollins is doing almost exactly what he did for years at Oregon State when it comes to points and rebounds.  He averages a few minutes less here and his points(4.3) and rebounds(3.1) are  inline with his (5.2 ppg) and (3.1 rpg) at OSU.  I will try to check on others.  Just something to fill the void while we wait.

    Go Miners!

  • Yup.

    Onyema & Kalu are the only ones out of HS, while all others are transfers. The 2 coming in are transfers as well.
    The ones not really making the grade at this time are Giffa & Mering. White & Clardy are somewhat filling in gaps. Onyema & Kalu have big potential.
    I think UTEP was founded on transfers since the 60s by the likes of BJ Hill, Barnes, Latin, Archibald, Foster, Thomas, Rivera, etc. The list goes on. The only colleges that were successful on recruiting mostly out of HS usually got cream of the crop.
      "He who has nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature & has no chance of being free unless kept so by better men than himself.

  • I am trying to look at it in a number of ways.  First are the players other than the two freshmen now locked in as Miners?  Or will waivers make it still wide open?  Now that Souly has graduated is he eligible to enter the graduate transfer portal? And if so would he.  Does he want to play pro ball or does he want to pursue his graduate degree here?  I see players entering the transfer portal to go down the chutes, sometimes considerable levels.  I have a window open to verbal commits and it is like coaches can go see what just hit the market.  So, are we now also locked into those players who have all transferred here?  Also, I believe we are required to maintain certain academic standards and meet required growth toward degrees and that must be figured into this.

    Questions;

    To what degree can Golding be held accountable for a) the current roster  b) the play of the players as individual players and his system c) what if any position are we in to trade up using the portal?

    To what part can the damned ronas be blamed?

    ARE WE FIGHTING TOOTH AND NAIL to not become a feeder program for CUSA teams that are leaving CUSA.  III CAN'T HEAR IT OR SEE IT!

  • No clue on the answer to the portal thingy.  Lots of interesting thoughts you posted by yourself and coaches and I appreciate it.

    I have always said to judge a basketball coach on a few things:

    Recruiting, Player Development, Strategy.  In the new era, according to some of the coaches whose comments you posted, the importance of some of these things may shift.  Maybe it shifts towards a Haskins master strategist -- "He could beat you with his guys then swap teams and beat you with yours".  Or maybe it favors a Tark kind of guy -- don't really bother coaching, just assemble the most freakishly athletic guys you can find and let them play street ball.  That said, I think the Tark style only works if you have dominatingly better athletes than your opponent.

    I think we want to keep an eye on Jans and how he fares.  He's got a talented team right now, and is hitting on all 3 of the mentioned skills.  Very talented coach in a similar position to us.

    So how does Golding measure up?

    Recruiting -- Really happy with Sibley and Satterfield.  I also think Kalu has a bright future, but jury is still out.  Giffa looks like a bust.  Hollins is one and done and was just brought in to temporarily fill a gap.   Mixed results, but the first two guys mentioned are efficient scorers which is a nice thing.  If you're going to pour your energy into D you need to be efficient on O.  Currently ranked #250 in points per possession.

    Player Development -- Bienemy and Kennedy have looked better to me this season.  Verhoeven a bit hard to tell because of his injuries, but when feeling good like last game maybe a little better.  Boum and Agnew the same players they were.  Obviously this one takes time to judge.  And maybe the portal thingy makes it irrelevant now.

    Strategy  -- Kind of unknown.  I think so far he has struggled with players in and out, and guys that some nights can't hit the ocean from a rowboat.  Last game he did some things different and won a game that should have been unwinnable.  Need to see more

  • I found this article and it is a great read.  It is about Bryson Williams and I wanted to know if he had gotten a degree at UTEP. He did.  He has a degree in Education. He is and always will be a Miner.
