  • I was only able to listen to the audio.
Other than we suck and we can't hit the water from a rowboat, was there anything of note?
Bienemy scored a lot.  Was it within the flow of the game or was it detracting from the offense?
Onyema got a fair amount of play. Teich and Bernie were really excited but they're such homers it's hard to tell.

  • So, I was at game sitting next to Dallas Maverick scouts there to se Lofton. They left unimpressed with him, but kept mumbling on about JB.
I've seen better shooting at JR High games than what I saw against LA Tech. The defense did pretty good & was incredible at times. Verho & Onyema played Lofton better than anyone has this year. The kid is a force, but couldn't get into any rhythm. Not only could we not score, but passes slipped through everyone's fingers.
Golding- He pretty much screemed & gave nasty faces to the players all night. He was more frustrated than the players. Aahh, the pains of the 1st year.
JB- Played like a boss on both sides. Hats off to this kid for keeping us in there.
Boum- A train wreck night on scoring. Horrible, however racked up 6 asst & 5 reb.
Giffa- Tried, but still lacking on D & ball distribution. Needs to hit open shots if he wants playing time.
Clardy- Was OK at ball security. Also not a scorer.
Saterfield- Another kid that stunk. He kept looking at bench in frustration.
White- Played hard on D, but no offense.
Hollins- Kid just doesn't belong. Had 1 OK game all year. He is my 2nd biggest disappointment so far.
Sibley- My biggest disappointment so far. You can see the speed, footwork, & talent, but he can't put it together. His mental status is not there. He has 0 confidence. I just don't get it.
Onyema- Played well. His jumping ability is stupid good. Needs to work on footwork.
Kalu- Was not his night. Lofton was a tall order
Maring- Also still hasn't found his game. 3rd biggest disappointment.
Verho- His D was the best he's played. Had some offensive moments, but not enough.

This offensive night is as bad as it gets. If none of you have been to a game, you need to change that. Go and concentrate on Golding. He is as animated as they come. It's quite a show.
Hopefully tonight will have a better showing on O.

  • Sibley, Kalu, Giffa, Clardy, and Onyema are all freshmen.  I know that's a bit deceptive with all the covid weirdness, but I'm just saying we shouldn't have to be depending that much on really young players.

I think Sibley, Kalu, and Onyema all show a lot of potential for the future.

We kept our guards and lost our bigs.  I understand that Golding was hoping not to have to do a complete rebuild, but honestly maybe blowing it up and starting over would have been better?

  • Who were those guys on the floor last night?  The only two guys that looked like they didn't belong out there were Hollins and Giffa.

Note that on the season, Satterfield, Sibley, and Bienemy are shooting 3s better than Boum.  47.3%, 43.8%, 40.5%, vs 35.3%

Kennedy is at 30.8% on the season and has only taken 3 less shots from 3 than Satterfield, at a rate of a little over 4 per game.

  • Team Summary   FG   3PT   FT
    First Half   16-31   8-14   4-4
    51.61 %   57.14 %   100.00 %
    Second Half   16-26   7-13   4-4
    61.54 %   53.85 %   100.00 %
    Total   32-57   15-27   8-8
    56.1 %   55.6 %   100.0 %

Shoot 55% from beyond the arc and you will win lots of games.  Unfortunately for all of the other games we have averaged 35% from 3-point range, and that will lose you half of your games.

So, the question is what happened?   Just a fluke or was something different.  If it was just a fluke, well laugh it up and enjoy it, but don't make anything of it.   But, if it was something different, what was it, why now, and is it something with permanence?

Personally, I think last night's win will cost us two or three losses because the 3 pointers will be seen as the way to go-and it isn't.  Fool's gold.  But the game has changed.  I'll take Shaq and you guys can take Curry.  Curry is pretty to watch.  Shaq was a demolition.  Curry is Dave Matthews.  Shaq ACDC.  Curry is a bouncy house.  Shaq was 7.8 on the Richter Scale.  One is fun and one is life altering.

Curry is pretty.  He gets up in the morning and he is pretty.  UTEP shooters aren't pretty.  Last night, UTEP was the best looking girl in the bar.  But this morning, I suggest you grab your clothes and get gone before she wakes up and you have to take her out in public for breakfast.  Mornings are a real reality check.

Don't get me wrong.  Last night she was a ball, though.

  • If we had half of the shooting I saw last night during the LA Tech game, we would have won that.
One thing I did want to bring up was Dekonink. I saw him sitting court side in regular cloths & not in uniform on the bench. I knew he was a walk on, but that was weird.
Golding- played everyone under the sun. Still some holes on D, but he had these guys ready & hungry.
JB- killed it again. 19pts 7ast. Come with it brah
Giffa- exact opposite of JB. Couldn't protect the ball, score, or defend. I feel bad for the kid.
Boum- 17pts, 6rebs, 5ast. This is the kid we know. He's all over the place.
Clardy- protected the ball & finally scored some. Needs to see passes a bit quicker.
Saterfield- 16pts. I love how this kid is developing. He needs to be as active as Boum without the ball to set himself up.
White- this kid is a good back up. He hit his shots & played hard D. I think he has also reached his ceiling, but he has confidence out there. He's an OK role player.8
Hollins- just Ugh. I wish he can help more, but his ceiling is maxed.
Sibley- finally some productivity. 11pts & 6rebs. His confidence took a nice boost after last night. He needs to keep driving the ball.
Kalu- kid played hard & is still learning. Made a lot of mistakes but raked in 4reb in 13min.
Verho- only played 14min, but was a general on the floor. No doubt his back is an issue, but plays hard when he needs to.
Onyema- I want to see him more. Golding said he looks bad for not putting him in earlier. Kid had steals, blocks, & a monster jam. He needs to keep playing at least 10min a game.

Overall, thus was total domination. I just hope they can take this momentum into these next 2 road games.

  • 100% agree with every player assessment Chanson.
In spite of his downsides, we need Onyema in the game.  He's athletic enough to recover from losing his man, and he's just a disruptor.   His energy made a difference.

Not sure if I posted this somewhere or just thought it and too lazy to go look so if this is a repeat I'm sorry.

I felt like part of our problem last year was it was BW's team and secondarily Boum's team and the offense took a back seat to feeding them the ball every play.  This year it's been exclusively Boum's team and the whole offense has revolved around feeding him.  But there are just too many nights when he goes 1-6 from three.  Everyone needs to be involved and if Boum gets his points he gets his points.

And yes, Kyyote, when I saw Hollins jack up and make a 3 I cringed because now he's going to want to jack up a 3 every time he touches it.  And i fear Onyema and Kalu and Agnew, etc, etc.

  • Yes. Agnew, Maring, & Hollins have no business shooting 3s. Only way I see them shooting a 3 is off the pass only. And that should be rare. Kennedy & JB are the only players that have proven themselves to shoot the long ball without needing a pass. Saterfield & Boum need the pass.
Talking about the long ball, Ch? Evans was on the bench. Does anyone know Golding plan on encorporating this kid? I know I said wait until next year, but with Kennedy out, we need aome fire power.
