  • So, apparently our basketball team still hasn't learned how to work the ball in under the basket... they run down the court and fire up a ... THREE???  For real?!?
To be honest, it's almost too aggravating to watch.  Defies logic why you would play like this... Haskins would have been apoplectic.  :-\

  • I was just about to post that if y?all want something to be sick about the aggies look like they are beating up on Abilene Christian. You are right about no offensive power anywhere around the basket and the aggies are pounding it inside and dropping bombs like rolling thunder. Tough day.

  • I wouldn't get to upset @ tonight's game. Kids are still learning what Golding wants. He'll, it's only the 2nd game. It will take some time to come. NMSU has been playing U Der Jans for a while with older kids & UTEP kept it close. If UTEP starts to melt down in the middle of conference play, then I can understand the disappointment.
That being said, I didn't watch or hear the game. I just saw results & it was closer than I thought.
If you want disappointment, look no further than the football team.
Anyway, Miners will have a small team to play on Tuesday night. When we get NMSU back at our place and we win, that is actually a fantastic leap ahead.

  • Going into the game I told my wife I expected us to lose, possibly big, and I was just hoping to see glimpses of who we could be under Golding.
So not disappointed at all.  There will be growing pains this season as the guys learn to play the Golding way.

    1.  NMSU is a good team.  They do lots of little things well and fun to watch.  They know what they are trying to do offensively and guys play within their abilities and trust each other to do exactly that.  They are who we hope to be.

    2.  Our defensive intensity waxed and waned through the night.  When we were intense, we played great defense.  When we were not intense, NMSU tore us up.  100% intensity 100% of the game is the Golding style, and what we saw last night was glimpses of a Golding team with some icky CRT half-ass residue.  I expect us to clean that up quickly.

    3.  NMSU rebounds so much better than us.  We also have icky CRT residue there.  The only guys that really tried to rebound were Kennedy, Tydus, and Kalu.  Note that Kalu got 4 boards in 9 minutes of play.  We have to fix this.  If we can hustle defensively, we can hustle rebounding.  Rebounding is 90% hustle.  Ask Kennedy.

    4.  Offensively we are just lost.  We look like a talented pickup team.  5 guys looking for an opportunity to jack up a 3 or take it one on five.  Occasionally there was a bit of legit teamwork, but I think these guys are still trying to figure each other out, and they don't play within themselves.  The three man weave we sometimes run at the beginning of an offensive set seems to have no purpose?  I'm a bit concerned about all this.  It's early, but...

    5.  I counted 4 times our big was wide open in the lane rolling off the pick.  Which means there were probably more that I didn't see.  Our guards saw it zero times.

    6.  Kennedy does so many things well, except 3s.  Boum had to shake some rust off, and still scores his points by volume of shots.

    7.  New guys.  Hollins and Sibley basically disappeared except for a very nice late 3 by Sibley.  Maring utterly lost and yanked quickly.  Kalu does well with his minutes.  Anyone know why no Satterfield?

  • Can someone who watched the game give a breakdown on each players performance & other important notes? Looking at box scores, it looks like Kennedy & Boum were the only ones busy while NMSU had 4 in dbl figures. That doesn't sound like a Golding defense at its best.

  • I have to admit that the team didn?t play up to the level of my imagination. I had imagined a defensive intensity that was forty minutes of hell in Hell. It was nowhere close. It may have been as good as Terry had the team playing, which was actually pretty decent.
But the offense was nonexistent would be too kind. The offense was just when we had the ball. And I am so tired of the team not playing with any power around the rim. I am thinking of sending the team a case of Nugenix or whatever it is that Frank The Big Hurt Thomas hawks to get their testosterone levels back up. I expected precise ball control running opposition defense in the dirt before passing into a damned near seven foot tall manly man looking to break anything attached to another person?s body if it gets in the way. Scoring two and drawing fouls to get free throws and foul people out. I saw nothing resembling that.
But I said my imagination.  I would have settled for a pleasant surprise but I got furrows between my eyebrows. It was just one game and I spite of the apparent lack of any planned and organized attack the team was able to make it look less bad than it was. Golding needs to show me something. Quick. Because what I last saw was not good.

  • It took Dimel 4 years to get something that starts looking like what he wants.

Our guys are not used to playing intense D 100% of the time.  CRT tolerated half-ass play on both ends of the court for significant chunks of the game.  Guys can buy in inside their heads, but it takes a while for the heart to buy in.

I saw half of what I wanted to see.  The D was markedly better when it was played all out.  This will get fixed.

We don't have the horses to bang low.  TV is long and thin.  Kalu has what it takes but he's a frosh.  Expect him to get more time as season progresses.  Hollins could bang but didn't much.  Something not right there and hope it can get fixed.  Maring was utterly lost the whole two minutes he was in.  Onyema worse when he was in game 1.

I am concerned about the offense.  But I'm not ready to panic over game 2 of the CJG era.
