Title: 2023 UTEP Pre-Season Picks Contest

I am retired and have plenty of time to spend pondering these things so I am going to make my predictions and invite others to do the same. But, it is kind of like playing poker for matchsticks unless there's something on it more than just bragging rights. So, there will be a prize.

Make your picks with winner, loser, and score. Award one point for correct pick, win or lose. Also, using weekly OPT scoring add three points for a 1st place win, two for 2nd, and so on. Also, add three points for a correct pick against oddsmakers picks of winners or losers. Pick an upset and it is worth three points. No one knows who the favorites will be at this time. We are pretty sure about some games and all have our own ideas for who we think may or may not be the team that will win. Some of us are swayed by desire more than others.

Wow, now that's what is called going in blind. We have no idea at all of the strength of any of these teams only of what they did last year. But, heck, I'm retired too...in a way, and I'll take a stab at it.

Not quite ready to make predictions but I'll try not to let my annual "hope springs eternal" optimism influence me unduly. I do hope the Miners can be more consistently good overall. Just a little more consistency over the past 3 seasons and UTEP would be gunning for their 4th straight bowl game.
Remember the weird 2020 season with a very close loss to UNT on the road that was supposed to be a home game? A win would have given UTEP a 4-4 season and a bowl but UNT went instead. After the NM Bowl in 2021 the 2022 season saw the Miners drop several close games, including a game ending field goal by UTSA, the best team in CUSA, to keep the Miners home during bowl season. Hopefully 2023 will be different.

C-USA has named preseason teams, 1st through Fourth. The Miners are very well represented especially on the field 1st Team. It would seem to me that the Miners are expected to be one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the league. I think they also are unsure of what the level of the new teams are able to play this first year.
On another note, vegasinsider has UTEP as a one point favorite and other sites favoring Jacksonville State by two and a half.

USA Today lists WKU as the favorite, Liberty as a strong contender and UTEP as the darkhorse. If those are the 3 favorites and UTEP hosts both WKU and Liberty, anything is possible. But there I go being optimistic again. Gotta quit that.

I would accept the blame. I copied and pasted the schedule and cut out the stuff that didn't ned to be there. All done on my laptop. Then I saw what my phone does to it.

In the first days of basic everyone would wear their civies pants and a yellow shirt with Air Force in the front. So because we were all in different colors (because of the pants) we were called Rainbows. My annual college football bible (Phil Steele Magazine) arrived today and since the mag always is rated the most accurate, I'll use it to guide me. Plus I'm sure Phil wouldn't lie to me.

He predicts that UTEP will be among the most improved teams in the country and will have at least 8 wins and play in the conference championship game vs WKU. He has UTEP coming in 2nd behind the Toppers.

I have us beating WKU but losing to MTSU as well as Arizona, whatever the outcome I am hopeful for at least 8 wins and then a bowl game win. Being in BIG 12 country I am familiar with the Ol' K State type of offense, it does work, but you have to be patient and go with the flow.

I believe we will see a defense this year that has never been seen in UTEPs history.

FWIW, preseason ESPN bottom 10 has JSU in their bottom 10. Solely based on them moving up from FCS however as far as I can tell.

That is so much part of the fun. Like I said in another post, I figure we?re walking into an ambush.

Normal teams would handle it like ants at a picnic. But we aren?t normal. We are sumo wrestling dudes from El Paso. We ride in like a cavalry unit and from everywhere Cheyenne and Apache are bashing brains and whooping it up while the cavalry weights for them to wear themselves out. I am afraid that since they are champing at the bit and fresh as a daisy they will have that slightest of an edge.

Sorry, and it is always a good idea to check my work. Here is what I now have. 31-10 and Sis was 11 points off, as was Alaska Miner. I spit the points won between the tied people. The 3 points for first and 2 points for second become 2.5 points each for Sis and AK.

Sooo...

Sis had 14+1+2.5=17.5
Mojo had 5+1+1= 7
Ky had 4+1=5
AK had 1+1+2.5=4.5
Kidd had 3+1=4
ATL had 2+1=3
MIW had 1+1=2

Please check my work, as it seems that my brain is easily confused this morning.

The unlv game changed nothing. No one could foresee that UTEP would lose to UNLV. No one could possibly see them just beating the mortal shit out of us. We are UTEP aren't we. I won't play any trying to find the closest missed swing. The score remains as it was.

Mojo and I were the only two that picked tech to win. We get a point for picking the winner. The Miners were favored to win so the two of us get 3 points for picking an upset. Mojo was closest and gets three points for first and I get two points for second place.

Unlike Dim, I know talent. I may not know how to sing but I know good singers. I may be a so-so basketball player but I can predict who will play the next level and in football I know how to evaluate good and bad teams. It's a gift. Miner in Wisconsin is in second place with me in the Cusa board prediction thread too.
