Well, the penalty can be debated, but the actions of the AD immediately following the game, and the action taken by the school makes it clear that the school has no desire to allow those who would say it was people from the south that still support racist attitudes to be able to make those statements. Those who were painting with a broad brush will have to admit that the school doesn't have any tolerance for perpetuating the stereotype. If the chant had been from a school not in the South, would the punishment have been as severe?
Some are saying that the punishment was way too harsh. I think that if this had been done by some northeastern school, that might be valid. But, Southern Miss has to deal with the students on the issue, and perhaps more importantly, it has to deal with the perception that racism is OK in Mississippi, and was making a public statement to the rest of the country, and to the citizens of Mississippi.
One more thing. Had the 5 kids not been representing the school, they may not have had any disciplinary actions taken. But, when you represent your school, you put personal stuff on the back burner. Those kids actions made them look stupid, but in the process they made S.M. look bad. They have the right to look stupid if they want, but they don't have the right to make S.M. and the entire state of Mississippi look stupid. When looked at in that light, I think the penalty they paid to be reasonable.
Just my 2 cents (and nowadays that isn't worth the two cents).

I know one thing, if it was me and they took away my scholarship, they could kiss my ass if they think that I would take some tolerance class taught by a bunch of whiny assholes...

Now you've either offended assholes ('cause they whine) or whiners ('cause they're assholes). You are clearly in need of sensitivity training. lieb

der Lieb knows all about assholes and whiners. Their national headquarters is in College Station, Texas, where he spends most of his time and where his natural coloring makes him almost invisible to many, beings how they all look alike and they all look like Aggies.

There's a great deal of truth in this statement. Except I don't need to spend time in College Station - Aggies have pretty much infested this portion of Texas. lieb

Aggies have pretty much infested the entire State; elsewhere they are referred to as Republicans, except in Dear Old Dixie, where they are known as the Ku Klux Klan--knights militant of the White Citizens Council. In Texas that function is occupied by the Department of Public Safety, a subsidiary of Big Oil (BO) administered by Big Banks and watched over by Big Brother. No, liebling, you don't have to hang out in College Station to rub elbows with Hate, Spite, and Malice--the T Party is a movable feast.
